Imagery and figurative language
Paragraph;
Throughout the poem, it mentions different groups of people who make up the country the Caucasians, African Americans and Chinese. The poet uses imagery to describe the people of the nation’s past, ‘who laid the train tracks, raised the bridges’ (line 27)and ‘picked the cotton and the lettuce’ (line 28). The poet uses these lines to show the diversity of the country and to celebrate their differences so they can get through past problems. The poet also uses metaphors, “All about us is noise… Each one of our ancestors on our tongues” (line 4-6). I think the poet is trying to talk about how we all have a voice, and how our perspectives and beliefs are based on our ancestors. To finish off the poem that the poet writes, “In today’s sharp sparkle, this winter air, anything can be made, any sentence begun. “ (Line 40/41). He is finishing the poem off on a positive note, that anything can happen. In today’s sharp sparkle could possibly be a positive change because of the new president.
