I was just 1 gene with a dream, a dream to make a baby boy that would have no life problems. Of course, I was passed down to the son by his father who was colour blind so unfortunately, this child will end up with the same fate as his father. I am an OPN1MW gene who got mutated when I was created. Because I was mutated when I start to make opsin pigments in the S cones for the eye for my host to see, they all turned out to be defective. Those S cones contain the genes that produce photopigments that are needed to make my host able to see colours but since they were defective that means that my host is red/green colour blind. My host has they type of red/green colour blindness called Protanopia which like all colour vision defects is on the X chromosome. if you’re wondering how I became mutated it’s honestly quite simple, during DNA replication i went through a process called Point mutation. Point mutation is a random mutation that happens on one nucleotide. Now you may think that being colour blind is no big deal but really it affects the host quite a bit. My host’s eyesight will be altered because they will have troubles distinguishing certain colours. Since my host is red/green colour blind he will loose the ability to see green, red, orange, pink and purple coloured tones which can make it hard for him to do things such as driving. Being colour blind has no physical effects to your body so you could be walking on the street and walk past 20 colour blind people and you would never know.
The Making of a Mutation Story
1)What did you need to research in order to create your mutation story? I had to research lots of stuff about colour blindness, like what it is like to be colour blind and how you become colour blind.
2)What new or familiar digital devices did you try to use ad you worked through this project? I used my laptop and iPad to do this project.
3)What was the process you used to investigate the topic? I researched each question and made sure I had all the information i needed to make this story. Then wrote the story and did these questions.
4)How did you verify and cite the information you found? I wrote down everything I used to create this story and I wrote down all the websites that I used. www.ghr.nlm.nih.gov www.prezi.com/wiadrqexsmd/mutations-colour-blindness/ www.colourblindawareness.com
5)How did the process of completing this challenge go? What could you have done better? The actual process of doing this project was fine but I think that I should’ve done this more spaced out so I didn’t do it all at once so that i wouldn’t have been so stressed about it.
