Chapter 4 Quadratic Functions

y=a(x-p)^2+q

From this equation, you can find out all the points for a parabola;

For the a value:

-If a>1 the graph is narrow

-If 0<a<1 the graph is wide

-if a<0 the graph opens up

-If a>0 the graph opens down

-You can multiply the a value by the points of y=x^2 (1/1, 3/1,5/1…) to find your rise/run for the coordinates of the points of the graph

For the p value:

-The p value represents a horizontal translation, which is if the vertex is moved to the right or the left on the x axis

– The opposite sign value of the p value is used (positive is negative and negative is positive)

For the q value:

– The q value represents a vertical translation, which is how far up or down the vertex is on the y axis.
