Illuminated Poetry

Many people judge others based on their looks or their imperfections. In the poem “This Scar of Mine” by Bella Cardenas, she explains a scar on her face through descriptive language. She explains that the scar doesn’t make her ugly, and despite others and society telling her that it defines her and is ugly, she believes the scar has a more deep and nostalgic meaning, and the big picture of beauty being deeper than the surface. She conveys this subject through her tone, the structure of the poem, and a large symbol. She begins with an optimistic tone, stating lines such as; “allowing my streetwise beautiful personality to shine through”, which is an example of how she believes that what is on the outside shouldn’t matter as much as the inside. This poem also takes a turn to a more nostalgic and deeper tone. She shows how she believes that scars hold a deeper meaning than just a mark. She shows that she believes “Scars hold history”, and in a way remind her to stay true to herself. She uses a concrete poem form to visualize the shape of the scar she describes, which is a moon shape, and a line that is longer than the rest to represent the scar sticking out. She also uses the point where the longer line is to separate where the tone changes from optimistic to a more deep, nostalgic feeling. The author also uses the scar as not only a concrete idea of a literal scar, but symbolizes it with a deeper meaning of our past memories, history, and life experiences which reminds us to stay true to ourselves. Along with this, the author uses her word choices and placement to bring the poem alive with imagery. She uses descriptive language and words to put an image in the readers mind of the face with the scar that she in visions. The way she places these describing words, not using proper punctuation, not having a rhyme scheme, and isolating words all help put emphasis on her tone, subject, and values of the poem. Overall, the authors’ values, and what is to be taken from the poem is that the “scar”, although others and society may portray it as ugly, it is not only a scar on her face, it represents her journey through life and is a constant reminder for her to stay true to herself and never forget her upbringing and all the struggles she may have been through in the past.
