Having the entire world going through a crisis right now is already affecting everybody’s day to day lives and creating new challenges, but can you imagine what it’s like for the less fortunate. The people that were already struggling to put food in their bodies and to put a roof over their head. The COVID-19 pandemic has made simply finding a meal particularly difficult for this community.
Craig Savage, the Tri-Cities community director and Debbie Fell from Eagle Ridge Bible fellowship in Coquitlam have come together to try and fill the food gap throughout the Port Coquitlam/Coquitlam area. With so many closures of support in the community, there are many people left empty handed. They are supplying meals six days of the week to this community with the help of a few volunteers.
It can be a controversial view as to whether these support facilities in place should remain in place or not. Because it places many workers and volunteers at risk and exposure. However should they simply find a way to continue working safely? Riverside student Zach Murphy “I think that workers are able to safely provide their services while maintaining regulations”. Having people acknowledge this and take action is critical. Alone we can do so little but together we can exceed our expectations by helping one another.
Some ways that anybody can help are donating to the local food banks. Since there are not many people out anymore, nobody is donating to the food banks leaving many people short of food. Food banks are entirely dependent on the support of donors and without them they are unable to provide a large scale of donations across Canada. Across Canada each month around 850,000 Canadians are assisted through the food bank.
Many people have taken notice to this, and in fact on April 24, 2020 there was a huge benefit concert fundraiser to raise funds for Canadian food banks. It was a huge success been billed “ The biggest multi platform broadcast event in Canadian history. Called the Stronger Together Tous Ensemble. It’s motivation was to raise $150 million support Canadian food banks.
Having so many Canadians come together nationwide has been really an amazing thing and has had enabled our friends that are less fortunate to be relieved of much stress of worrying about where they’re next meal would come from.
This benefit was making headlines all across Canada having many Canadian artists, athletes authors and astronauts contributing to make this possible. It is truly incredible to see people brining their hearts together during times that are particularity difficult for everybody. “This is all new territory for everybody so it is important that we go through each step together to ensure the safety and well-being of one another” said Riverside student Connor Lohn.
Making sure we show our appreciation to those that have enabled our country to continue running. They are working harder than ever and putting themselves in immediate risk of contraction of this virus to keep our lives running normally. So, let’s show our thanks by paying it forward and helping somebody. Whether it be your neighbour, or your grandparents. We are all in this together.
