How might your digital footprint affect your future opportunities?
Give at least two examples.

A digital footprint could impact opportunities that I have in the future, such as jobs opportunities, because what you put on the internet will definitely impact the employer’s decision when they consider hiring you. It’s not wise to put suspicious or reckless content from yourself on to the internet, because it could potentially rob you of a job opportunity. For example, if someone put out a video of themselves heavily drinking or doing something irresponsible, the employer will notice that and probably write you off as an irresponsible individual. You’re not the only person looking for that job position, so they would choose someone else that they consider more responsible.

If you’re irresponsible on the internet, people will think of you as an irresponsible person. Your actions on the internet can impact your workplace as well, like if you did something wrong on the internet, people could look at that and say “oh, so those are the type of people this company hires.”

 

Describe at least three strategies that you can use to keep your
digital footprint appropriate and
safe.

A strategy that you could use to keep your digital footprint responsible and safe is to always monitor what you put out on the internet. Always double-check what you’re putting out there, and try to make your best prediction of how the public would react. If you think that the public would react negatively, then you shouldn’t put whatever you want to put out there to keep your digital footprint safe and friendly.

 

You could also private your account to make it more difficult for employers to find, so it keeps your digital footprint safer. If you reduce what you’re putting out there, you will have a reduced possibility of your digital footprint getting tarnished by past mistakes (or current mistakes).

 

The last strategy I have to keep your digital footprint safe is just thinking about the future before you do something you may regret. Always look ahead and ask yourself if you’ll be proud of your actions in the future, and if the answer is no, stop doing what you’re doing. Don’t let the past impact your future.

 

What information did you learn that you would pass on to other students? How would you go
about telling them?

 

I learned that past mistakes will catch up to you, so it’s best to limit them and really think about what you’re going to do before doing it on the internet. Posts and messages that you put out on the internet can give you a tarnished reputation and ruin future job opportunities that were open, but now closed because of what you put out on the internet.

I would tell others to always double-check what they’re doing, and always think about the future and opportunities that could be closed because of what they put out on the internet. I would tell others to be careful and to private their accounts to keep their digital footprint more safe.
