HCE 9 – English Assignment

This picture is called “Assimilation vs. Inclusivity” and is created by unknown artist. The picture depicts the discrimination that First nations children went through during their time at residential schools. In the picture the children on the right side are full of color and all look different. It shows that each child is a different person and is unique. This shows them before their times at residential schools. The children that are in the middle of the picture have grey clothing and it looks like their personality is fading away. They don’t look as unique as the children on the right side of the picture. Their hair is cut, and they all have the same clothing. There is little color on the children and all of the children in the picture don’t look as happy as the ones on the right. This shows that the children are in the residential schools and are starting to forget who they are. Lastly on the left side of the picture there are children who have lost all of their color. They look the same and look sad. This shows the children as they are later in residential schools and have forgotten their language, culture and identity. I think that the color in this picture signifies their culture in them. Before residential schools they followed their culture and were all unique but as they go to residential schools, they forget their culture and their personality which is shown with the fading color in the children. This picture shows that even though the indigenous children were just like the Europeans children they were discriminated.
