Socials Discussion

I mentioned in class that we didn’t hit record the first time we filmed and didn’t have enough time to finish filming.

Script

Q. Who won the War of 1812?

Hailey: The promise the British didn’t keep to the Aboriginal people was the land. British had promised a secured land if they helped fight in the war with them and not against them. So in the end Aboriginals gained nothing. Canada won the war because it brought them closer together with America and they gained land.

Jason: Britain also spends money in Canada, Lower Canada benefited from higher foods price. New Brunswick sold food and supplies, this was good because by selling food it had allowed Canada to make so money.

John Carlo: Canada had way more wins than America some wins for America are they are able to develop peace for the next 100 years. Something good for Canada in the war was it started the foundation we know today.

Q. Was the War of 1812 a pointless war?

Hailey: I said yes, but if it didn’t happen America wouldn’t have the same history. Napoleon wouldn’t be so famous and America would have as much history. Without Americas history, America wouldn’t have as much as a reputation for showcasing there accomplishments.

Jason: If Britain would’ve won the war it would’ve made America different than what it is now. For America it wasn’t as pointless  compared to being on the British side if the British would’ve won then they would’ve been happy to of had the war.

John Carlo: It wasn’t that important because no land was claimed in the war but people did get killed. It would’ve been better if the war didn’t happened and they could’ve found a way to keep the “war” more peaceful.

Q. Which parts of this war have the greatest impact on Canada today?

Hailey: When Isaac Broc got shot above the heart his side became unsure of what to do. On Isaac’s side was the British and the Aboriginals. The battle took place in Ontario so they were fighting over land in Canada if the British would’ve won this war they could have taken over this part of Canada.

Jason: This made the french become friendlier with the Canadians. This was a positive for Canada because it could help them in the future in case they have to make an alliance with them and go into battle with another country. They can go into battle knowing they will have more troops and more allies.

John Carlo: If Laura Secord hadn’t of ran 30 km to spread the news she over heard they Americans discussing as they were staying at her house, things could’ve been very different. Its also a good thing the British leader chose to believe her and its very lucky that the Aboriginals found her along they way so they could take her back to their leader.

Q. How was this war part of creating Canadian and American identity today?

Hailey: If Britain won more wars there was a chance we could’ve been closer with them than with America. Some parts of Canada could’ve belonged to the British and it would be weird having a whole bunch of the same countries spread out all over Canada.

Jason: One way both countries were able to develop are, Canada and America are close and even today we are peaceful with each other and we treat them like our neighbours.

John Carlo: If there was no war, there would’ve been no history so in a way all countries have benefited from the war. Especially Canada because it is a free country. If theses wars didn’t t

March/April Lab Reflection

Salad Rolls Lab Reflection

Why did you choose to reflect on this lab? I chose this lab because it was my favourite to make. I have never used rice paper before and I thought it was interesting that it can mold into a certain way after getting it wet.

Did you enjoy the lab? Why or why not? I enjoyed this lab because I used a lot of things that I have never used before, such as rice paper and rice cakes. I also liked that they were healthy and there are ways to make them healthier by adding more vegetables to them. Cutting the carrots diagonally was challenging because they rolled away a lot. Eventually our group figured out that if you cut them in half before cutting them they roll away less.

Did your product turn out the way you had hoped? If yes, what helped? If no, why did it not? In my opinion our final product tasted great! Rolling the rice raps was challenging because they stuck together easily and they were very fragile. The final product didn’t look as nice as they could’ve.

Did you group work well together during the lab? Why or why not? (i.e. were there any issues that came up/how did you solve them?) My group worked well together we all took on different jobs and communicated efficiently. Two people got the ingredients while the other three boiled the water and got out all of the other supplies we needed. After taking our pictures some washed the vegetables and then handed them off to the others who then cut them to fit in the salad roll. I mixed the noodles and made sure they didn’t over cook or stick to the bottom. During this time another member in our group was cutting the tails off of the shrimp. When the vegetable cutter were finished they started to make the sauce. After everything was finished we individually rapped up our own roll.

If you were to do this lab again, what might you do differently? Why? If I were to do this lab again I would add less hot sauce to the Salad Roll sauce. I would also take more time and consideration to roll up the rice raps. I would make sure I was cautious not to rip them and do my best to roll them tighter.

Salad Rolls

Salad Rolls Reflection

Before                                                                            After

1.) I enjoyed this lab because I found it challenging. You had to cut up a lot of items and you had to work fast before your rice roll started to stick, you also had to make sure you rapped it tightly.

2.) I would add more/ different types of vegetables. Adding more carrots would increase your source of Vitamin A. If you added corn it will increase your source of Vitamin B and C. Overall this salad roll has a fare amount of every food group, Vegetables, protein, meats, and carbs(rice raps). The only food group it is missing is fruit but you can’t really add fruit to this salad rap without making it taste bad.

3.) Deep frying cooks food quickly, adds extra calories and fat to your food and, can increase the risk of kidney failure and high cholesterol. Deep frying in a healthier oil such as palm oil or sunflower oil can make deep frying healthier. As long as your overall diet is low in fat, saturated fat and trans fat, you can eat deep-fried foods once in a while. Eating deep fried foods with vegetables can help balance the deep fried foods.

  • Crack the eggs in a medium bowl, careful to not puncture the yolks. Set aside.
  • Cut avocado in half and carefully remove seed. Depending on how big the seed is, the hole in the avocado
  • In a medium baking dish, try to rest the avocado half inside the edge of the dish so that the avocado doesn’t tilt over. You need to keep the avocado from tilting so that the raw egg does not spill out.

  1. When the potatoes are cool enough to handle cut potatoes in half lengthwise, scoop the interior out of each leaving about 1/4 inch shell of potato flesh and skin. Add the scooped-out potato flesh, grated cheese, salt and pepper into the pan and stir well to combine.
  2. Place the potato shells on the baking sheet and feel them with the mixture. Press the mixture with a spoon so a whole is formed to make space for the eggs. Sprinkle chives on top and crack an egg on top of each stuffed potato.

Mise-en-place

Avocado, Bacon,eggs, and bread.

Cooking:

Preheating the oven

Cutting the avocados in half

Taking out the pits

Making the insides deeper so the egg will stay in

Adding the eggs into the avocado. I had to use a toothpick to keep the avocados stay up so the egg doesn’t spill out.

Final product: Bacon is sprinkled on top and bread is on the side

Final step: Clean Kitchen

Scones Lab Reflection

Scones Lab Reflection

  • I chose the scone lab because I found it to be the most challenging so far this term.  I plan to go over it again as I believe I can find new ways to improve it for next time. I thought it was challenging to knead the dough. While I was watching the lab demo I thought it was going to be easy. However, when I actually went to try it the dough was sticking to my hands and wasn’t cooperating with the way I was folding it. By the time I was done the dough was still in a ball and a lot of it remained on my hands.

  • I enjoyed this lab because it was the most complicated one to do. My group had to work hard together and we had to stay on task to be able to finish on time. I found it challenging because there were so many steps to remember. When we had to go to the ingredient table to find everything, it was very busy but we communicated as a team and sorted out who will find what. This made it more time efficient. The scones are my favourite thing we made so far. I made them at home to share with my family. They enjoyed them too!

  • Our end result wasn’t really what we had hoped for. One of the problems was that we didn’t knead the dough as many times as we should have. When the scones were done baking they were flat. Something our group did well was, monitoring the time and they were perfectly cooked, with golden on the top.

  • This scone lab was the one of the labs our group worked really well on together . There were so many steps that we had to do so we worked efficiently to finish on time and we worked together to assign jobs.  Right away we knew who had what job.  Usually we don’t look at the jobs board till the end and everything is rushed but before we even started to cook we review the details on the board. We knew who was doing what and that saved us time at the end and helped us build team camaraderie.

  • If I were to do this lab again I would definitely take more time and patience with kneading the dough. I  would also add more flour on the counter. Overall our group did very well on this lab and the outcome was good. Basically our only drawback was flat scones but they still tasted delicious.

For this project my group worked very well together, everyone did what they said they were going to do there was no one who shot down others ideas and we all worked well together. If I were to do this project again I would ask m group if there is anything extra I can do if I can finish early. I should’ve asked if I could’ve helped them. Overall this project went well and there was nothing that was confusing about the project.
