Hi, my name is Mark. Today I am super excited, because my class is having a science today, and there is a lot of science equipment in the lab that I have never used before that I am lucky to get to use. First, we are using a Ring Stand, which is something that supports the Bunsen burner, iron ring, pipestem triangle, and other items, often while heating a substance. Next, my teacher mentioned that we were going to use a Beaker, which holds water when doing a lab and can also be used to heat liquids. My teacher also mentioned we would be using a Watch Glass, which he said, “Is used for keeping liquid contents in a beaker from splattering”. Next, Mr. Robinson, our science teacher says that we will be using an Erlenmeyer flask, so we must go get one from him. As Mr. Robinson explains, “An Erlenmeyer flask is a Narrow-mouthed container used to transport, heat, or store substance. Often used when a stopper is required.” Lastly, tongs. Just like it is spelt and sounds, tongs are used to transport a hot beaker; remove lid from crucible.
Before the science lab, Mr. Robinson had mentioned that we would find some WHMIS symbols and Household Product symbols on some of the things we would be using for this lab that we were doing. The first, one we would see, was the Biohazardous infectious materials symbol which he said we would find on the sharp things bin. When you see the Biohazardous infectious materials symbol, it means that the materials in that product are organisms or that the toxins they produce can cause disease in people or animals.

Next, this WHMIS symbol is kind of new to me, and this is the Explosion Hazard symbol. Basically, this symbol means that the materials are explosive or highly reactive. These products have the ability to explode if handled improperly.

The next two symbols are symbols you can find in household products, as they are called Hazardous Household product symbols. The first symbol is the Flammable symbol. This symbol simply means it may catch on fire, especially if near heat, flames, or sparks. I see this symbol at home in products such as nail polish, nail polish remover and rubbing alcohol.

I was just at home watching some Netflix, as there are some new episodes of Cobra Kai that I was excited to watch, then my mom yells, “Mark go clean the bathroom!”. So, I go upstairs to go clean the bathroom, and as I am cleaning the mirror, I notice something familiar on the Windex bottle. Then, I notice that it is a Hazardous Household product symbol, and I look closely, and I see the Poison symbol! I don’t panic and remember that is means that the if I were to eat, drink, or even smell the chemicals in that product I can become very sick or even die.

Situation demonstrating safe conduct in an emergency:
As I am just doing the candle lab with my science partner, Hannah, an emergency occurs! Her hair is on fire! Then, I think back to the safety story and the safety video we did and watched, and I quickly head over to Mr. Robinson’s desk to let him know what happened. Next, I run over to get the fire blanket and wrap Hannah with the fire blanket, so it extinguishes the fire, and then I finally walk over to the stairs and pull the fire alarm. In the end, Hannah’s hair was fine with only some smell of ash, and I was happy that I had studied the safety rules because it was very important today during the emergency.
Situation demonstrating unsafe conduct in an emergency:
Today we are having another science lab! Mr. Robinson tells us to go to room 213 for the science lab, as it has a bigger room and has everything, we need for the science lab. After a few minutes I find room 213 and find my class. Once I get into the room, I notice that it’s quite warm and think it is no problem to be bare foot, so I proceed to take my shoes and socks off. Mr. Robinson than randomly selects us partners, and I get Cole. Moments later, I am carrying a beaker and accidently drop it on the floor, and the glass shatters everywhere. Then, I know I must clean it up, so I go to pick up it up with my hands and accidently step on glass and cut my hand, but “I am totally fine”, I say to myself and don’t tell Mr. Robinson what happened and hope he does not find out. Then, just as we are finishing the lab, the bell rings for my next class and I get my backpack and walk to my next class because I think Cole is okay to clean up all the materials by himself.
Ethical Dilemma:
An ethical dilemma one might find in science is Animal Testing. Animal testing is when they test new products on Animals before they release the products to see a bunch of different things. In Animal testing, they also test to see how the body and skin of that Animal will react to that product, which includes doing a bunch of different experiments. I personally think this ethical dilemma is wrong, because animals such as rats, (Even with them being nasty) get taken away and become lab rats. Then they get products tested on them before the product gets released, with products such as make up products, and get tested on them with a big chance of that animal getting blind in an eye or something happening to their skin. In my opinion scientists should find another way to test these products without having to test them on animals.
To conclude, these safety rules and science equipment are very important to know and learn.
