Circle Talk Reflection

Circle talk reflection

In our English 9 class, we had a circle talk with my classmates, Ms. Tate (Our English teacher), and a special person who visited us in our classroom that is Coast Salish, her name is Ms. Galligos. In that circle, each of us talked about our culture, some experiences we had and we also honored our family and ourselves. Ms. Galligos and Ms. Tate openly talked about their culture and life experiences while some of us are just getting settled with this kind of talk. Few moments passed, we started getting comfortable and openly talked about the questions Ms. Galligos are asking us. I learned about my classmates’ life that I didn’t know before we had this talk and I also knew that there are some people in the class that have the same nationality as me.

This activity is the best example of oral communication. Oral communication describes any type of interaction between individuals which makes use of words and involves speaking and listening. This exercise build a much stronger community in the room because we felt connected to each other by respecting the person who’s talking. We respect the person who’s talking by listening to them sincerely and getting engaged by their stories. Even though some of us are not that close, listening to them somehow makes me feel a connection to everyone in the room. This kind of activity also strengthens our relationship as classmates and even with Ms. Tate and Ms. Galligos.
