Is social media harmful or beneficial? That’s a good question, and one that’s more relevant now than ever. But before we start, let’s get one thing straight. This isn’t the 1970s. We know that technology is not evil and will not take over the world. So, with that being said, social media is not harmful. Ok? It’s not going to bite you. Not only that, it’s beneficial. It’s a good thing! Social media enables people to express themselves, including those who may not have the opportunity to do so otherwise. In addition, it enables people to connect conveniently with friends or family who live far away, and, contrary to popular belief, encourages social interaction and communication. It can allow people to get information out. You can even hear about important events on the other side of the planet in real time. It is also used often for more frivolous communication and guess what? That is ok. It is ok to be lighthearted or to like and talk about inconsequential things. That is something that social media encourages, and it is not harmful. Before social media people talked about inconsequential things too. They just didn’t do it on the internet because the internet wasn’t invented yet. So, in conclusion, social media is, in fact, a positive influence on our lives rather than a negative one.
