Community Connection

For my Community Connections assignment, I chose to interview an actress named Evangela Kepinski. She has appeared in United Players productions such as “The Thursday Night Bridge Circle,” “A Christmas in Wales,” and “The Here and This and Now.” She has a BA in theatre and graduated from Langara College’s Studio 58. I contacted Evangela after she collaborated with my father in “A Christmas in Wales.”

I asked the four given questions as well as 3 I came up with.

She answered all of my questions in detail. After I thanked Evangela, I started work on this post. She gave a lot of very helpful advice and tips to someone who is starting out in the world of acting. I am very interested in theatre and I have taken part in musicals through Pulse Productions. I learned a lot from Evangela’s answers and am interested in seeing what she takes part in in the future!

I also interviewed an actress, director, and the current artistic director for the United Players Theatre Company at the Jericho Arts Centre. She has directed such works as “A Christmas in Wales,” “Pride and Prejudice,” and “West Side Story.” Sarah has a BFA in acting and a an MFA in directing from UBC. I contacted Sarah after she collaborated with my father for “A Christmas in Wales.” I asked Sarah the same questions I asked Evangela.

Sarah gave very useful advice on how to join the world of theatre and gave good insight into her role as artistic director. I learned about the system of theatre and how you have to have passion to succeed. I thanked her for her answers and am eager to see what she directs next!

    REFLECTION:
    A) I had a good experience making this podcast; I had a good time when writing the script, and recorded punctually. However, we stayed serious when talking and recorded about the somber subject.
    B) On the first few days of writing, we had a hard time getting started, but once we had, we were on a roll. We also wrote bullet points for us to record a less stilted discussion for the podcast. Once we were recording, it was very easy to get distracted by our phones or other things. We eventually got all sections recorded. Andrew was the one to edit in the music, and then he sent the finished podcast to me to put on my edublog.
    C) While recording, we found it was very easy to become distracted by simply talking about things, going on our phones, or making edits to the script. So, on the first recording day, we did not get much done. However, on the second day, we remembered what had happened and recorded without distractions. We also learned a lot about residential schools and the people who survived them. I read the Secret Path for the first time, and found that it was very interesting and a sad book to read.

    Critical Thinking –
I have learned a lot about residential schools in class before, but I also learned new things while working on this project, specifically about the conditions inside residential schools. I definitely gained new knowledge and insight into residential schools.

What elements of school culture are necessary to be successful both academically and socially?

A school culture where learning is encouraged and cultivated properly, a school culture where you can have ideas and be creative without being mocked and chastised, a school culture where the learning environment is positive, open, and motivating, and a school culture where higher academic achievements are regarded as achievements.  All these elements of school culture are very necessary to be successful academically and socially.
