INCLUSIVITY

When I see this image, I see the relatively large black birds, the sign that the black birds are holding, and a small green bird. What meaning does this image want to say with these things? Let us look at this image in detail.

Firstly, one may notice the background. When one sees the background, one can notice the texture of the right and left backgrounds is different. The right side of the background with the green bird looks rough and rugged, while the left side of background with relatively big black birds looks smooth on the top and the bottom looks as same as the right. What does this symbolize? This represents the conflict between the green bird and the black birds, and the different environment and life of them. The middle line due of the difference in background textures on the right and left, represents the conflict between the green bird and the other birds. The right background shows the rough life and situation of the green bird, and the left background, which combines the rough and soft parts, represents the relatively smooth and peaceful life and situation of the black birds on the left. Secondly, you can see the situation of this image by looking at the colours. The background is white that giving a soft impression and the birds on the left have a black colour, which generally feels dark and strong. Also, the color of the sign that the black birds are holding is also black and it has a strong feeling. Lastly, the bird on the right has a dark green colour. Although black and white are complementary colors and have a sense of harmony, green does not have any relation between either colour. Therefore, the small bird on the right with the green color does not fit well with the overall feeling and feels distant. This represents a situation where green birds are being discriminated against. Third, the signs held by black birds show exactly what is going on and what this image is trying to convey. The leftmost sign says, “MIGRANTS NOT WELCOME” and this includes the black birds’ bad point of view on migrants that is a different species from themselves and migrate from one part of the world to another. Additionally, there is another sign which suggests that the green bird should “GO BACK TO AFRICA”. So, I think the green bird represents Africa- Americans and the black birds represent people who discriminate and disparage black people from Africa.

As one looks at the background, colors, gestures, and the symbols of the signs specifically, one can recognize that this image was talking about the issue of racism. So, what is the message that the painter wanted to convey through this image? The painter of this image wanted to convey a message of inclusivity. In this era, there are many people who do not respect each other’s differences and cannot embrace them, which leads to many social problems such as racism. Therefore, this image compares the situation of the problem to birds with a message to acknowledge, respect, and embrace each other.
