I started the project by drawing a rough sketch on a piece of paper of how I wanted my card to look. However, once I started graphing, I realized that my drawing was too complex, and I had to simplify certain aspects. The first challenge I encountered was when my computer battery died and the Desmos page I had deleted. This forced me to restart the project, however this time I made sure to create an account and continuously save throughout the process. I was also unsure of where I would be able to use logarithmic and rational functions due to their unique shapes.
I began graphing the face and eyes first, which went smoothly. However, I ended up spending a significant amount of time on the ears since I was trying to make them curvy and be proportionate to the face. I eventually settled on a rational function, which I found difficult to transform into the shape I needed. However, the hardest part for me was shading, and building different inequalities. This was especially difficult when I was coloring in the hair. Due to the sine function being inversed it didn’t allow me to build an inequality with the shoulder function. I resolved the problem by limiting my inequality to a specific x value.
One of the hardest parts I found was having all my lines exactly align to ensure minimal gaps. The strategies I used for this was mainly trail-and-error. I would try to keep adding decimals until I was satisfied with the preciseness. I found that the domains and ranges where one of the most important concepts in this project. Thankfully, Desmos places a dot where two lines intersect which made my job much easier.
During this project I received very minimal help, but I did have to seek assistance from my father when I was building the face structure since I didn’t know what type of graph would look best.
I found this project to be extremely helpful since it allowed me to refresh older concept, allowing me to prepare for the final exam. I especially tried to incorporate more trigonometric functions since that was the unit that I struggled the most with. Although this assignment did let me practice more with translations and transformation, I felt already confident with that unit and didn’t need the extra practice. Overall, I really enjoyed doing this project even though it was very tedious and took me a while to finish. I look forward to sharing my creation with my family and friends.
