Scientific Method Bubble Gum Lab Conclusion Science 10 H 2017

The objective of today’s experiment was to determine what type of bubblegum brand was able to stretch out furthest and produce the largest bubbles. Hubba Bubba, Gum A, and Big League Chew, Gum B, were the two brands that were being compared and thoroughly observed. We began our experiment by verifying that both pieces of gum equaled 10.4 grams and then proceeded by stating three observations. Next, we hypothesized that if you chew Gum B then you would be able to blow the biggest bubble because the soft consistency would allow the gum to be more flexible. After chewing both of the gums for three minutes we blew several bubbles and measured their diameters. We concluded that our hypothesis was proven correct based on the data that we collected. My partner and I had come to a conclusion that Big League Chew was more efficient at blowing bubbles. We believe this because Gum B had a 3.525 cm higher bubble average than Gum A. We also observed that Hubba Bubba was thicker and created smaller bubbles compared to, much chewier, Big League.

In the second part of our experiment we hypothesized that if a bubble gum creates large bubbles then it will also have a high stretch-ability because both activities require flexibility. We conducted the experiment by measuring the distance in centimeters the gum stretched before breaking. Hubba Bubba was able to stretch 22m 82cm while Big League only stretched 2m 32cm. Unfortunately our hypothesis was refuted however we we were able to prove that the gum’s bubble size doesn’t determine its stretch-ability. We discovered that due to Hubba Bubba’s thick consistency it was able to stretch out further, on the contrary Big League’s softness caused the gum to easily fall apart. During part one Big League’s flexibility allowed us to create big bubbles while Hubba Bubba easily popped.

Here are some variable that could have affected our investigation:

  1. The duration for which the bubble gum is chewed.
  2. How decent you/your partner are at blowing bubbles.
  3. The quality of gum which you decided to chew.
  4. Whether one partner stayed and the other backed away with the gum or both partner moved away slowly at the same time.
  5. How accurate your partner was at measuring the bubbles.

The diameters of our bubbles and stretch-ability lengths were examples of quantitative data while the observations were examples of qualitative data. In summary, I enjoyed this assignment since it educated my classmates and myself on the scientific method and allowed us to use a creative approach.
