Pre Calc 11 – Factoring Polynomial expressions

First, let’s focus on factoring a binomial, then try a trinomial.

36x^2 - 4

This is a very simple expression, 36 and 4 are both perfect squares and can this can be easily simplified.

(6x-2)(6x+2) is the answer. If we follow the distributive property, this expression will become 36x^2 - 4

Factoring a trinomial is slightly more complicated but this example can be done straightforwardly.

a2 + 2a - 24

First, we find the factors of 24.

1 x 24,  2 x 12,  3 x 8,  4 x 6

Which of these adds up to 2?  4 and 6 (well, -4 and 6).

the answer will be (a-6)(a+4) because again, following the distributive property the expression will become a2 + 2a - 24
