Digital Footprint

1. How might your digital footprint affect your future opportunities?
Your digital footprint is a crucial part of your future opportunities. First off, let’s say that you apply for a job in the future. Most employers will search your name on google and do a thorough background search. Your digital footprint could determine the decision that the employer makes, whether it’s positive or negative. Secondly, when you apply for a college or university, you have good grades, good school records, and good volunteer hours, but the school finds your social media accounts and digs up some negative things about you, your actions, and the people around you. The school will probably decline your application because of your digital footprint. Lastly, it can impact the decision of your scholarship. In some cases, the people who decided whether you get a scholarship or not will look at your digital footprint. If they see that your digital footprint is inappropriate, they’ll think that you’re not a good match for the scholarship.

2. Describe at least three strategies that you can use to keep your digital footprint appropriate and safe
Your digital footprint is found very easily, so you’ll need to take extra precautions to keep a safe digital footprint. First off, you should always be cautious about what you post. As well as being tagged in photos. If you have a great personal digital footprint, that won’t matter if people can see the photos you were tagged in that might be harming your digital footprint. If your employer sees your social media accounts, it would not be the best if there are some inappropriate things on your social media. Secondly, the safest choice you have is to put all of your accounts in private. If you have your account on private, others who don’t follow you won’t see your posts, and sometimes your name on google. Having a private account also reduces the risks of getting into scams, identity theft and many other things. Lastly, if you do not have a digital footprint at all, that could be a little bit suspicious for other people when they look for your digital footprint. Having a good digital footprint can be very beneficial. Let’s say that you make a Twitter or Instagram account that is public, only posting appropriate and beneficial things like school events, school clubs, volunteering, jobs, graduations, travelling etc… if employers see that, that could benefit you. The employers would think that you have a good personality and that you are involved in many things. They would think that you’d be a good fit for that job. It could also apply to a college/university/scholarship application.

3. What information did you learn that you would pass on to other students? How would you go about telling them?
I would tell other students is to think before they post or comment. This might be a very obvious rule, but lots of people don’t do this. Doing this one simple action can impact your digital footprint greatly. Having a bad digital footprint can easily ruin your reputation. As long as you be careful and think before you post, your digital footprint shouldn’t be all that bad. Lastly, always keep your digital footprint in mind because the smallest comment, image, or post can have a huge effect on you.
