Tech Team Quarter 2 Reflection + Core Competency

  • Tech Initiatives + Assignments
    • What are some initiatives\things\volunteering you have been involved with this past term? Describe what you have done, and the time you have spent.
      • I was Involved in a number of things this quarter. First off I would say that I was a big part of the hamper card making process. In total I helped make around 10-15 cards, after making my 5 cards that I needed to make, Abby and I worked together to make more. All together I would say I spent a little over 2 hours on the cards. I also try my best to regularly volunteer at the wave. During my spares usually on Tuesdays or Mondays I sit at the wave. It usually isn’t that busy but when in the rare occasion of a student, I have been successful in helping them with their problem. I continue to actively be a member of the social media team. I make sure to post the weekly menu with the updated foods. I am also a very active member of the rapid event email “chain”. I make sure to post things on instagram, the tv’s, and and the link tree as soon as possible. This quarter, I have been more focused on passing on my duties to younger grades. Sarah M. and I have recruited 3 grade 11’s that would replace us and our duties next year. So far they have joined the Riverside showcased Club where we have had a couple small meeting with them where we talk about small things such as what being an active social media team member looks like and other responsibilities. Sarah and I have made a detailed word document which lists all of our responsibilities and small things to keep in mind, we are planning on sharing the document with them soon and meeting with them to go over everything more detailed as well as getting them to join tech team.
    • What are some things you have learned?
      • Using the Cricut for the hamper card making process despite the fact that I had already learnt how to use the Cricut once, the cards were a bit more complex as I needed to learn how to layer 2 papers, but once I circuited a couple cards I got the hang of it and things went better. This quarter specifically I think that I have completely settled into being a tech team member. Firstly, I have learnt just about all the basics in the makerspace (3d printer, Cricut, and buttons). Now when students come into the library with questions I am more confident in my responses and ability to help them.
    • What are some of the challenges, aha moments, small wins…you experienced?
      • One challenge that I experienced was using the Cricut initially because I had only used it to cut out stickers but not paper, I learnt a couple things along the way such as needing to adjust the settings before cutting to match the paper type. I was really happy with my success because now I am able to confidently use the Cricut outside of tech team such as in leadership.
  • Core Competency
    • Focussing on the specific competency (Communication)
      • What are your specific strengths?
        • I think communication is one of my greatest strengths, ever since I took on the responsibility of social media, I’ve come to understand how important that clear communication is, for success and to avoid misunderstandings. When teachers or other peers request to post something I always make sure to be specific with what they want posted in aspects such as when they want it posted, how, what they want included on the caption and more.
      • What are some specific stretches, areas for growth, What are some goal to grow in this area?
        • A goal I have in communication is to be more forward. What that means for me is to be more forward towards other students. For example if I notice that a student is struggling with something I would like to be that person who offers them help instead of sitting off to the side. Another area of growth I have is to communicate with different grades. I noticed that I communicate a lot with either teachers or senior students but not younger grades.

3D Printer Introduction

  • What are some things that were challenging?
    • There was nothing specifically that I had problems with but I had small stumps along the way. The first stump I had was coming up with a practical idea that I would be able to use on a daily basis, after thinking for awhile I had realized that I always misplaced my earrings which has caused me to loose them often, so I decided to make an earring holder. Although I had used it before, I had trouble aligning the border with the bottom of my design. After several attempts, I decided to ask another Tech Team member for assistance, which helped me solve the problem efficiently.
  • What are some things that worked well?
    • I was really happy with the end result as I only needed to do one print, which saved time and materials. The sizing of the earring holder worked well for my needs, as I don’t have too many earrings. The overall design turned out well in terms of sizing, the sturdiness of the print, and the neatness of the details, especially the imprint of my name.
  • What did you learn? What personalization did you do?
    • I learnt how useful 3d printers can be in terms of practicality and other uses because before this project, the only time I would use 3d printers was for school projects which would apply to the course content and not to myself. The personalization I decided on was simply putting my name in the middle of the earring holder as an imprint.

Tech Team Quarter 1 Reflection

What are some initiatives\things\volunteering you have been involved with this past term? Describe what you have done, and the time you have spent.

  • Despite being in Grade 12, this is my first year on the tech team. Within my first two months, I would say I became quite involved. For starters, I sit at the Wave table once a week during my spare (Block 4). Although there aren’t many people needing tech help during this block, when a student does come for assistance, I try my best to help them with their issues. Usually, I am successful, but if I can’t resolve the problem, I ask a more experienced person in the library, such as a tech teacher or another tech team student. I make sure to keep a positive outlook when helping students, as I understand that sometimes I am learning alongside them.

Another initiative I’ve been heavily involved in is social media. I am part of the social media team within the tech team, and I would say I am quite active in this area. As I have access to the school’s social media accounts, I understand this privilege and try my best to consistently post content (1-2 posts a day). When teachers email the RapidEvent account, I’m usually the one who posts the requested content, whether it’s for the TVs, the school’s Instagram, or a creative poster with the information provided.

Additionally, through my involvement in leadership, I help post events held by leadership whenever I receive emails from my leadership teacher. Through my club, Riverside Showcased, we create creative content for Instagram, covering school events or holidays. This aligns with tech team’s goal of expanding student engagement on our social media. Our club’s content often relies on student and staff involvement, which draws significant attention from other students.

I also create a weekly menu for the cafeteria and try to repost the daily menu each day. Since I am quite active on the school’s Instagram, I regularly check the DMs, post student-requested content, answer general questions in the DMs, and monitor the comments. Finally, I have attended two events held in the library. The first was the naming ceremony, for which I also helped create the invitations, and the second was the Microsoft event, where I sat at the Wave.

What are some things you have learned? What are some of your strengths?

  • There are three things I have learned. The first is how to use the Cricut. At the beginning of the year, I was completely clueless about using the Cricut, but after the sticker assignment and with the help of Ms. Leung, I’d say I now know how to use it at a standard level. After learning to use the Cricut for the sticker assignment, I was able to teach another tech team member and a friend how to use it. With this new knowledge, my peers and I created a pumpkin for the pumpkin contest, which earned 2nd place. I have also improved my editing skills for videos and creative posts (using Canva), as I found myself creating and editing various types of videos and posts.

What are some of the challenges, aha moments, small wins…you experienced? What are some areas where you can grow? What are some stretches?

  • A challenge I experienced at the beginning of tech team was keeping up with all the social media content that needed to be posted or created and finding ways to efficiently showcase all the events happening in the school. After some trial and error, the solution I found that worked best was using my resources. For extra creative content, I found that collaborating with my friend’s and my own club, as well as leadership, was the most efficient approach. Members in our club and leadership helped create content for the social media accounts, and I helped execute their ideas.

Another struggle I faced early on was audience engagement and finding ways to generate content that students would enjoy. I discovered that the best way to do this was by incorporating trends already popular on social media in a school-appropriate way. For example, our most recent post was inspired by a trending Roblox game called “Dress to Impress,” where teachers “walked the catwalk” and showed off their costumes. This video was very successful, gaining over 300 likes and even a repost from SD43. An area I’d like to grow in is showcasing a wider range of the Riverside community we don’t often see, such as the theatre company, band, and Riverside art.

Looking ahead…What are some things you would like to improve and/or accomplish? Is there something I want to learn or try?  Focus on technology, leadership and school culture. Provide a specific goal.

  • I understand that my main focus during tech team is social media, but after learning how to use the Cricut machine, I would love to improve my skills with different tools in and outside of  the makerspace, such as the 3D printer and the laser cutter. Once I learn to use these tools, I’ll be able to help other students who need assistance, rather than being unsure of how to help them. To achieve this goal, I plan on spending more time in the makerspace during my free time and experimenting with these tools with the guidance of those who are already experienced in using them.

Tech Team 12 – Cricut – Logo/Stickers

What are some things that were challenging?

  • Coming into this project was a bit intimidating because I have never used a Cricut so I needed to learn how to use a Cricut. Once that I got my design set I uploaded it to the Cricut account. The most challenging part of my design that it was too complex so I needed to heavily edit both the text and design so that it would actually be able to cut cleanly. Another mistake I made was selecting the wrong choice on Cricut of “print then cut” instead of just the flat cutting. So once I realized my mistake everything overall went smoothly.

What are some things that worked well?

  • Our first success I would say is that I asked for help from others who already knew well how to use the Cricut such as my friend in tech team and Ms. Leung. Once I fixed my mistake and had everything good to go, we were able to get a good successful print first try as well as the weeding. The transfer onto my laptop was also very smooth and I was able to transfer it on one go.

What did you learn? How can you apply this?

  • This whole process took me a bit less than 2 hours which was actually less than what I expected. The first block I worked on this I got barely any progress but looking back on it, the mistakes I made allowed me to create my sticker successfully at the end. I can apply this to future tech team projects as this is my first year, I should always remind myself that it is okay to make mistakes.
