Indigenous Exploration “Kamloops Indian Residential School”

Reflection:
Your experiences creating this assignment:
I loved the experiences that this project brought me. During this assignment, I felt like my group had a good understanding of what we were expected to do, making us work hard and not wasting too much time. We had many laughs since this project allowed us to create something fun for all of us to do. During this whole project, it was fun working with new materials like the snowball microphones and the websites we used that were given to us by our lovely librarian. These tools make it easier for us to work and base more of our time on the most important parts. It was awesome to try new things because this gives us new skills for our lives. Everything we have learned will be carried to new places and classes that need those specific skills to succeed. These experiences have taught me a lot.
Your group’s path in researching the topic:
Our path to researching this project was that everyone had a few things they had to look for and then add those to a word assignment to which we all had access. This made it so easy to see if everyone was doing their part and helping the group in the long run. We added links so that we could check if the information was right that we were adding to our work document. There was a lot to cover in the residential schools, so splitting it up made it way more efficient. This gave our group better work habits.
Obstacles or items you learnt in the recording:
As a group, it was hard for us to give each other the recording of our podcast. We found that sending it via messages was too long and we didn’t understand how to do that, so we used Discord instead and that made it a lot easier. It was also hard for us to use Audacity due to the fact that it’s so new to us. We had many trials and errors during its use, but now I can fairly say that I will be able to use this easily next time. Our group was a good team and never brought anyone down if it took them many times to figure out the delete button or the pause button. I do have to say it was pretty funny to see us all struggling through.
Reflection on one of the below core competency questions:
Option 3: Positive and Personal Cultural Identity…What are some aspects you value about this culture, as well as your own?
I chose option 3 because there are many parts of indigenous culture that I think is really cool. First off, I think it’s amazing that indigenous people only take what they need and nothing more. This is the best mindset to have for the reason that we don’t know what others’ minds need and if we take too much, we could be hurting the people around us. Let’s say there is a well in the community that only has enough water for 1 bucket full for each family. When you take more, then some families are missing out on that water. Water is something everyone needs, but you are making some other families suffer just to bring yours up. That family might have to walk a lot more to get the same amount of water they need. Take what you need and be grateful that you have it. Something about my culture in Norway is that we have free health care and free schooling. This can really help people who are already struggling by making their lives a little less stressful. Knowing that you don’t have to think about schooling costs for your kids is really nice because you can spend that money on making your lifestyle better and more advanced. People can’t even afford to get their kids new clothes and basic materials. This system will make your money go towards helping your kids and family without spending all you have. I think that it’s important that countries and cultures want to make a difference in the way their people live. We all have to help each other out because living is very expensive when it shouldn’t be.
