Electric House-Solution Fluency

Our class has been working on building electric houses. We are working on solving a problem within the house using a process called solution fluency. The process is composed of a few different steps; Define, Dream, Deliver, and Debrief. we will be using these 4 steps to describe the process of our solution fluency. For this project me and Diva have decided to recreate the snoopy house.

Define

The problem Diva and I have chosen to solve is a problem that occurs in many houses on the daily. The problem being that in the summer, it gets very hot and people overheat due to global warming. overheating can lead to illness and should be avoided at all costs. If you are too hot in the summer it also makes it harder to sleep and that greatly impacts your health and mood. One of the worst things is if you are sleeping and do not even notice if your house is at a dangerous temperature.

Dream

We have decided to create a fan that can turn on based on heat sensors. For example, if the temperature goes above a certain number, the fan will automatically turn on with a speed that suits the temperature bringing it back down to a suitable number. With a fan that can turn on without the press of a button means that the house will always be at a safe temperature on hotter days.

Deliver

We decided to code the microbit with a heat sensor. We had a bit of technical difficulty getting it to work, because of flaws in the battery or wires but in the end, we were able to get the fan to work with the heat sensor and be a very affective addition to our house.  We went through some rough patches in this project, mainly with time management and how we were going to finish everything on time. With some work at home and school we were able to finish the microbit and the house’s wiring and interior.

Debrief

In the end the circuits and microbit were able to work and make the house functional. From this project I learned that even if things aren’t going your way, with enough work and effort, you can make anything happen. We were worried we would not finish our house on time, but with work at home, we were able to execute it well. We did a good job on the making of our house as a whole but I think something we could improve on is our time management. Since this project was at the end of the year, we did not have a lot of time to complete it. If I were to do this again I would write up a plan of what we would complete each day with an initial goal in mind instead of feeling rushed each day. This project taught me things that will be useful in the future like innovative thinking, problem solving, and solution fluency.

here is a video of the microbit working:

Hunger Games Theme Park-District 7

This is our theme park, we based it off of district 7 which is known for lumber.

Reflection:

The district we chose to base our theme park off is district 7. District 7 is well known for their production of lumber and tree-based products. For our theme park we tried to incorporate trees and wood in every aspect of the park because that is their main export. We did our research and incorporated everything we know about district 7 and what it is like there into our theme park. Our rides, foods, shows, and feature characters all tied back into district 7 being known for lumber. The climate at our theme park has rainy and cloudy weather most of the time because district seven spans across British Columbia, Alberta, and Washington area. To generate images of what we wanted the aspects of our park to look like, we used NightCafe. We put together the presentation of our theme park using Microsoft sway. I used to analyze and critiquing to help research and pick out details from the books about district 7, we also used analyzing and critiquing when creating the images of our theme park and ensuring that they look like they would exist in district 7. To generate the images, we found that we needed to include detail, but not too much detail because then some aspects mentioned may be overlooked. For some images it took a good amount of tries to get the picture we envisioned, in the future I think I will come up with a clearer idea of the image I wanted to generate. During the process of using sway to format our ideas, we learned how to use certain functions within the platform.

ADL 10 Information Fluency

My name is Ellen Ottenbreit I attend riverside secondary school and me and my friend Diva have prepared a presentation on the Lyell island conflict, what we were wondering, what we found and our opinions on the subject.

Ask: What are the questions you are trying to answer?

  • What were the key factors that led up to the Lyell Island conflict?
  • Who were the people involved in this conflict and what were their respective views?
  • What were the environmental concerns related with the development plans on Lyell Island?
  • How did the Haida nation feel about the development plans?

acquire: how did you try to answer your questions?

to find answers to our questions we used Gale engage, wilderness committee, and coast funds. for the process of making the sway we used citation machine to properly cite our sources. For the photos of Lyell island we used sway’s search feature.

Analyze: Did you find relevant information to answer your questions and cite where you found it?

Yes, we found accurate and relevant information that answered the questions we had. We cited all of our sources for those websites. the citations can be found at the end of our sway presentation.

Asses: how did the process go?

I think the process went quite well, I feel like we were both able to equally contribute to the work given. we were good at managing the time we had to work on this assignment and worked on it as homework in order to have it completed on time. We both learned a lot of new information about the Lyell island conflict and I did not know what it was until Diva and I began researching.

Science 9H Midterm Reflection and Goal Setting

Pillar 2, Lab Skills

Current strength

One thing that i feel i am good at is making good use of my class time. when there is an assignment due I am able to complete it in time, even if it means taking it home to work on. if I am absent I will make sure I know what i must complete and when to complete it by.

Future improvement

In the future I want to provide more detail when writing labs, and to be able to analyze them gaining a deeper understanding of what I am being taught. I want to provide a further explanation focusing on why things occurred the way that they did.

Goal

My goal for the next half of this semester is to provide more details in my observations during labs. I will do this by doing research outside of what we learn in class to expand my understanding of that topic.

Revisiting midterm goal setting – June 17th

I feel that I have improved on writing more detailed observations in labs, but I could still deepen my understanding. As science 9 honors progressed, I feel like I have improved with the organization and overall quality of my labs. To help meet this goal I have used past worksheets and notes to make my labs more detailed, something I have yet to do is additional research on my labs. An example of this is for the strawberry DNA lab where I looked at the past notes we took as a class to make my writeups more detailed. I am proud of this because I feel my notetaking skills, specifically in labs, have improved a lot over the span of the second semester. If I were to do anything differently, I would have managed my time better so that at the end of class I would have time to do additional research, and if not complete it at home. I want to improve on this because having more detailed lab writeups, and doing additional research can help expand your understanding of the topic and you will discover additional information. In the coming year I will continue to work and improve on my lab writing skills and make detailed lab writeups.

HCE 9-English Write

I have chosen to analyze an image called Gender podium illustrated by Marilena Nardi. This photo follows the theme of inclusivity, more specifically gender inclusivity and in this case the lack of it. In this image we can see a podium where three men proudly stand upon. Holding up the podium is three women that it would collapse without. We are able to view this image in a way where we can see the women and their contributions, but if we were to be present in the scene, the only thing we would see were the three men being credited. This photo has provided us with a view that contains all the information. There is one major line in this picture and that would be the podium’s outline separating the women and men. This shows how women are under credited even when they have greatly contributed to something. Without the women holding up the podium, it would collapse. Nobody celebrating the men’s accomplishments knows that the women are the reason they got to where they are. This image conveys two main emotions, the men are feeling proud and are taking in all the credit, whereas the women are disappointed and underwhelmed with thanks. The men are taking all the credit for the accomplishments made, and they are doing it with a smile on their faces, they do not have a single care that the women’s successes have been undercut. The women in this image are doing everything they can to carry the weight of the podium and are not even being recognized for their hard work. This picture is showing us that things are not always how they seem from the outside, and that you do not know the whole story by seeing only the results. Nobody cares who helped get them where they are, all they care about is that they did. The worst part is that the men being praised are not giving thanks to the women because they do not feel it to be necessary. Men have been favored over women for a long way back through history, when truly men and women are both equally important to our society.

Core Competencies reflection

Strengths

I am good at vocabulary building for example when we are starting a new story I am able to learn the vocabulary easily by practicing the quizlets that Signora Durand posts on one note. I am also good at writing proficiency for example during our class writes I am able to remember the vocabulary and sentences structures causing me to be able to write a completed story. I can interactively communicate with other students for example when we are doing our skits for the stories I am able to help plan them effectively with my group members.

Examples and Evidence of My Strengths

I know that I am good at these things because I study hard for the tests and I practice my lines for the skits, when I study for these things I am able to remember the information I learn and retain it when it is time to. I find that studying using the quizlets helps because you can actively study with flashcards instead of reading over the same thing over and over until I remember it all. This helps me be successful with whatever I may be doing because I am able to memorize the structures.

My Goals

I can get better at pronouncing certain words, because sometimes when I am speaking in Italian I end up mispronouncing some words. I could also improve at memorizing all my lines in the skits and eventually be able to go and present the skit without looking at the cue card. Another goal I have is for me to get better at grammar and not make errors when I’m writing or speaking in Italian.

My Plan to Reach My Goals

To reach my goals I will practice my pronunciation of words I am unsure how to say, and if I need help knowing how to pronounce something, I can ask for help. To remember my lines for the skits I can practice them more so that I can remember them when it’s time to present. If I ever am unsure about my grammar or pronunciation I can ask Signora Durand about it.

Socials 9 goals

One of my goals for the next half of this term is to try and add more detail to my assignments and check them over before handing it in to be sure that there are no mistakes. another goal I have is to ask questions if I don’t understand how to do something, so that i can complete it correctly.

Second story cycle and in-class write

Second Story Cycle and In-Class Write

*I am an active listener and can respond to simple, direct questions.

Every day at the question of the day I can answer the question successful. During the story biscotti blu I took part when being asked questions about what was happening in the story and was able to answer them in full sentences. I pay attention to the story when it is being told and can participate when I’m asked to. The more that I speak Italian, the more I am easily able to remember the structures.

*I can recount simple experiences and activities and tell something I learned.

When I am preforming a skit, I am able to memorize the structures better because I am saying them aloud opposed to writing them. I can recall information from the past storis and skits in order to complete the in class writes. When listening to the stories Signora Durand askes questions and that helps me remember information better.
