Sgraffito tile purpose

These were just some of the tiles I liked and used as inspiration.

The pig tile in the first picture is a fauna.

I made a tile with the inspiration of fauna tile, it is like animals and 3d design. I made a cow design with some wavy lines connecting with Sophia’s tile. Her tile is flora inspired, she did a flower design with the same waves I have in the background. It shows the cow looking down at the flower with Sophia’s tile inspired by Flora.

We originally were gonna do a big collage but realized the tiles are too small so we did a simpler design.

Here is my final design

Sgraffito tile- week 2 (final product)

My tile is out of the kiln and finished.

I loved using the lighter clay because the colors came out so vibrant.

I am so glad my tile didn’t have big cracks or explode in the kiln.

I am happy with how it came out but I didn’t see the blue underneath the white in the face so that is shining through so it looks a bit messy but I love it.

It was connected by the cow that I made looking down at the flower Sophia made.

Clay, underglaze, overglaze, carving tools, tile cutter.

HOW DIFFICULT DID YOU FIND THIS PROJECT?

-I didn’t find this project that hard it was just working in a small space that was a bit challenging.

WHAT DID YOU LEARN THE MOST ABOUT DURING THIS PROCESS?

-Carving, I am not familiar with carving clay.

WHAT WOULD YOU DO DIFFERENTLY IF YOU HAD TO DO THIS PROJECT AGAIN?

-Carve out the face as well.

Sgraffito tile- week 2

This week on Monday, I finished carving and painting and put it on the rack to be bisque fired.

When I was done I started working on this and the previous week’s edublog.

My struggle for this project was to get small details on such a small tile.

I tried to find the smallest carving tools, that would work best for the tile.

My partner made a flower from the viewpoint above.

I made a cow that is kind of looking down at the flower if this was a real-life scene.

I really like how I carved and colored it, lets’s just hope all goes well in the kiln.

Sgraffito tile- week 1

This week we have a three-hour class, lots of time to work on our tiles.

For week one of sgraffito tiles we sketched out ideas but then realized the tile was gonna be too small for our design, so we came up with a way simpler idea.

We made the tiles and waited for them to air dry a bit. Whilst they were air drying I was cleaning the back of the classroom.

After it was air-dried we realized how small it was so we smoothed it out and painted our base coat.

We waited a bit again for that to dry and started carving our simpler designs.

Start of week two we will finish the design to be bisque fired.
