PE 9 SUBSTANCE ABUSE ROLE PLAY
GROUP MEMBERS: Elandi, Tarek, Sophia.
Your task: Use the scenario provided or make one up (needs to be approved by your teacher). The role play is meant to be in the context of a friendship/relationship that you care about and hope to maintain and must relate to substance use or related addictive behaviors (i.e., Gaming, gambling, excessive use of the Internet, etc.)
SCENARIO (describe your chosen scenario briefly here):
Your friend is usually shy but has been getting a lot of attention lately for partying. You don’t really go to parties but now that your friend is loving all the attention, the pressure is also on you to go.
To do:
Decide which role each person will play.
Sophia: The friend that goes to parties (Rashida)
Tarek: the friend that gives Sophia attention (James)
Elandi: the friend under pressure (Lil E.)
Consider the IDEAL decision-making model when you think about how this situation should be resolved.
Keep in mind that you want to RESOLVE the conflict in a peaceful manner using some of the strategies we have practiced in class including the previous unit (i.e., reflective listening, assertive communication, delay, refusal or negotiation skills, apologizing, etc.).

Develop a role play script that involves all group members:
James: Wasn’t that party fun?
Rashida: Yeah, I guess…
James: Oh, come on just admit it was fun
Rashida: Okay, okay fine it was really fun.
James: That’s more like it
Lil E: Hey guy’s what are you talking bout?
James: Oh, just the party last night
Rashida: Oooh that reminds me, there’s another one on Saturday!
Lil E: are you sure you want to go to that? It drains all your energy and you become really mean.
Rashida: Yess, I’m positive. You should come with us to try it out. Maybe you’ll see why I do it.
James: Exactly what she said.
Rashida: See, nothing to worry about
Lil E: Mhm, no I don’t really want to do that.
Rashida: Ugh whatever
James: Let’s get out of here
Lil E: Wait, what if we go to the pool instead?
James: Mhm, no I don’t like going to the pool.
Lil E: ok fine what about going to the mountains to ski and get fresh air?
Rashida: Ooh yes, I like that idea but when is it going to be?
Lil E: Saturday?
Rashida: Umm, ok I guess we could go there’s going to be other parties anyway
James: Yeah, I guess you’re right
Lil E: So, it’s on? Okay, on Saturday meet me at my place at 8 am
Rashida: That’s early but sure see you there
James: Okay, okay, I’ll go too.
Lil E: Perfect see you then.
Lil E: Wait, stop!
Rashida: What?
Lil E: I’m having second thoughts about that guy, James.
Rashida: What do you mean?
Lil E: I don’t know, somethings off about him. He’s kinda sketchy.
Rashida: What’s sketchy about him?
Lil E: Isn’t he the one that’s dragging you into all of those parties?
Rashida: Yeah, but those are fun, and I enjoy them.
Lil E: What do you do at the parties that are so fun?
Rashida: What if I take you to one of them?
Lil E: Okay fine, but just a small one.
Rashida: I know one that will be just right for ya’.
Lil E: Promis me you won’t do anything stupid.
Rashida: Can we invite James then?
Lil E: Since he brings you to all the parties then sure. You can bring him with us.
Rashida: James wait! I need to tell you something important.
James: Wanna step inside, it’s a little bit cold outside.
Rashida: Wanna have a seat?
James: So what’s the problem?
Rashida: Well, Lil E thinks there is a problem with parties.
James: Why would there be something wrong with parties? I don’t know what could be wrong with parties.
Rashida: She just doesn’t like them.
**RASHIDA TELLS HIM ABOUT THE PARTY**
Rashida: Well you can come if you want.
James: Okay, I guess I’ll come.
Rashida: Okay, I gotta head to English class. See you!
James: Okay, bye!
James: Oh, Lil E!
Lil E: Hey!
Lil E: Have you heard about the party tomorrow?
James: Rashida told me a little bit about it.
Lil E: So you’re up for it?
James: I already told her that I’d come, so I’ll be there.
Lil E: Ok see you on Saturday, and tomorrow!
Complete the questions below.
Practice your role play and be prepared to present it to the class.
Hand in the questions below after all performances:
Questions:
- What are the influences involved in your roleplay? (i.e., a difference of opinion, going against your values, pressure from friends, pressure from a dating partner, etc.)
-Sophia, your friend that is usually shy gets influenced to go to parties.
-Tarek is a popular friend that invites her to parties
-Elandi gets pressured to go to parties with Sophia because she doesn’t want to go alone.
- Write a script for your roleplay (on a separate sheet of paper).
-See above.
- Explain how your conflict/issue was resolved. What skills were used to resolve this conflict/issue?
-They use negotiating skills to get out of Sophia’s issue.
-Elandi gets Sophia’s attention to not go to parties anymore
-They find ways to cooperate with the attention issue.
- How would using these skills make the person in the role play more resilient?
Using these skills would make the person more resilient since we are not forcing them to not go to parties, but to bring it down a notch. This will make the person get over the addiction to parties and be resilient amongst it. Not everyone can just get rid of an addiction, but they can be resilient about it.
