Gender Inequality Article

The article:

Women’s soccer is still fighting for equality — on many fronts | CBC Sports

This article is about how woman are still fighting for equality in soccer. There is a pay gap between how much men get paid in professional soccer and how much woman get paid in professional soccer. The merch such as jerseys, are hard to find and are being sold in unreasonable sizes. This all started when Canada’s women’s soccer team won against Sweden in the gold medal match. Considering this was the most watched event in Canada, many girls wanted to get a jersey with their favorite player’s number and name. Companies have been not meeting the stock of the jerseys that are ordered. As opposed to the men’s team player jerseys, which you can buy whenever you want and in what size you want.  Many famous woman national soccer team players are mentioned. Such as, Steph Labbé, Jessie Fleming, Deanne Rose, Julia Grosso, and more. They reference to these players as many girls look up to them as one of their heroes. You can buy jerseys that include their names and numbers on the back on the Canadian soccer website. However, they only provide sizes extra small. The objective of this article was not to get you to follow these well-known female soccer players or buy jerseys, but to recognize that woman’s soccer is still fighting for respect. I chose this article because I have a strong interest in femininity and solving these gender inequalities that woman are faced with everyday.  Sports is a big one where woman are treated differently than men. Since the beginning of time, no one believe that a woman was fit for sports. Sad to say that some people still do. Every woman in sports has experienced getting put down in sports just to raise a man up. For me personally, I have come across this many times in basket ball, soccer, and dance. It seems as if anything I do good, people assume that a boy is doing it better than me. I cannot being to imagine what professional female soccer players have gone through to get to the top, because it is not easy. Some may say this article is just about the merch gap. However, it is a sign that women are still not yet equal to men. This article relates to The Friday Everything Changed because of the sports played in the article and in the book.  In the book the girls are threatened to not step a foot onto the softball field. None of them owned a bat or ball, or even had a large enough space to play the game other than the softball field. Like the article, women are having a pay gap and a merch gap because of the world’s discrimination. An interesting similarity I found while reading the article was how the woman’s world cup achieved way more success than the professional men’s games. In the book, boys only threatened the girls because they knew they could outrun them as is proved when Ms. Ralston got a home run. Both those examples are woman surpassing men in sports and still not have proven that woman deserve equal rights.
