Week 4- Math 10-Trigonometric Ratios

This week we started the Trigonometry unit. I chose to focus on trigonometric ratios (using lengths of triangle) because it was something new that I just learned in this class. Before finding what trigonometric ratios were, I had always wondered what SOHCAHTOA stood for, as well as what the cos, sin and tan buttons on my calculator meant. Trigonometric ratios are super important and helpful because without knowing these fundamentals, it would be impossible to further your knowledge in this unit.

WHAT IS SOH CAH TOA?

SOH CAH TOA is an acronym that will help you remember how to determine sine, cosine and tangent ratios for an angle in a right triangle.

SINE: (s/o/h= sine is opposite over hypotenuse)

COSINE: (c/a/h= cosine is adjacent over hypotenuse)

TANGENT: (t/o/a= tangent is opposite over adjacent)

VOCAB:

Right triangle: a triangle with a right angle

Right angle: 90 degrees

Ratio: comparison between numbers

Hypotenuse: side that is across from right angle

Opposite: side that is across from theta

Adjacent: side that is beside theta/left over

Theta: Greek letter in alphabet (fancy way to say x)
