  • Before starting my work experience at the Vancouver General Hospital Simulation Center, my primary goal was to gain a deep understanding of how a healthcare system works by learning and observing from professionals. During my work experience, I had the chance to observe many simulations and even participate in some of them. Through observing surgery simulations, I gained a firsthand look at the collaboration between surgeons, nurses, anesthesiologists, and other healthcare professionals. I saw how communication and precision were crucial in ensuring patient safety and successful outcomes. Another aspect of my development was learning about the role of technology in healthcare. VGH Simulation Center is using advanced equipment like high-fidelity mannequins to recreate realistic medical scenarios. Observing these tools in action deepened my understanding for how simulations are used to train healthcare professionals.
  • Before beginning my work experience at the Vancouver General Hospital Simulation Center, my goal was to feel more prepared and familiar with the transition from school to post-secondary life by gaining practical experience. Thanks to the experiences I gained and the information I learned at the VGH Simulation Center, I gained a clearer perspective on post-secondary education. Thanks to the staff at VGH Sim Lab and a UBC residency instructor, I learned a lot about my future potential career pathways. One way I developed was by gaining insight into the expectations and responsibilities of a professional environment. Being in a workplace setting taught me the importance of time management and organization. For example, I had to ensure I arrived on time and maintained a professional attitude during simulations and interactions with staff. Also, observing different simulations and learning about the different roles in healthcare helped me realize how diverse the field is. I now have a better understanding of the pathways I might pursue, and I feel more motivated to explore them.
  • Before starting my work experience at the Vancouver General Hospital Simulation Center, my goal was to build confidence in expressing ideas within a professional setting. I can say that I improved my communication skills in a professional environment during my time at VGH Sim Lab. I learned to ask thoughtful and relevant questions, which helped me engage more actively with professionals. By the end of my placement, I felt much more confident in expressing my ideas and participating in discussions.
