The picture above shows the gentle flow of lave from a shield volcano. Shield volcanoes are the largest volcanoes and they form over hot spots. Shield volcanoes have thinner magma that flows more easily when it reaches the surface, which flows out in all directions. These eruptions are less explosive than composite volcanoes and never have violent eruptions, just basic love simply flowing out. The individual islands of the state of Hawaii are simply large shield volcanoes.
