Potable Water Crisis in Indigenous Nations

Reflection 

My experiences creating this assignment:  

I had a lot of fun completing this assignment, but also learned a lot about the issues going on around Canada. I was very invested in the research of our project, and learned many new ways to find information, including on the websites provided on the riverside website. I learned about the issue of unsafe water, like the ways it is caused, weather that is disregarded of maintenance, or insufficient funding, as well as the effects it causes people, and the ways they must change how they prepare food, drink water, and bathe. I also learned how to more effectively work in a group and got to practice recording as well as editing audio. This was a very engaging project since I was able to learn so much about what happens around the province and country that I live in. I think that most people think that everyone in Canada has everything they need, which for the most part is very true, but there are also may parts of this country that have issues like water, food, energy, and more. I feel grateful that I can live such a free life where I do not have to stress about things as simple as water and food. This project really helped me understand how we can help people and communities that are under certain restrictions, crises, mandates, and more. 

My group’s path in researching the topic: 

Ely and I used many different research platforms like Google, Curio, Gale, Topic Finder, as well as Flipster. These were especially useful in finding some details that might otherwise be brushed over but have a big part in the issue of potable water. We also found some of these websites to be more engaging and interesting to look at compared to google or Bing. Our plan to research was to write all of the major points down from all of the websites we found, and then to add them into our script in parts that relate. We had many crucial points that we wanted to implement into the recording. When finding the information, we made sure to always link the websites that we took information from to credit the original people who wrote the articles and the documents. We used all sorts of different information, from videos, to documents, to old newspapers, and many, many websites.  

Obstacles or items I learned in recording: 

While recording I learned more about the difficulties that come while trying to record something as long as our script. With over one thousand words in our script itself, we had to take many cuts of the recording to take out parts where we had stuttered or mispronounced a word. I was lucky enough to have learnt a lot about the recording process last semester with conversations 10, but there will always be more to learn, and this was another example of a new time to learn. A big obstacle that we had to face after recording was that there were small issues that we only noticed after exporting the file. This means that we had already compressed the audio and that if we wanted to adjust the voices, we would have to cut out parts of the music. We had to go back to an older version of the recording to be able to remove the mistakes, and when we were finished, we listened to it many times to make sure that there were no more awkward gaps or drastic volume changes. When we edited all the vocals, we had to adjust the music and find a point where it would not feel too abruptly stopped. This took two whole days as well as a bit of time at home for me. Finally, when we were done recording, we had a finalized edition of the audio and exported the best version. Next time I would add the music after I had finalized the editing of the vocals which would have gotten rid of the hassle of editing it twice.
