- WHAT PHYSICAL PROCESSES CAUSED THIS DESTRUCTION?
The destruction in Indonesia was caused by a 7.5 magnitude earthquake that struck just off the central island of Sulawesi. The earthquake then set off a large powerful tsunami that engulfed the coastal city of Palu. These processes caused the soil to liquify which resulted in buildings and whole neighbourhoods moving.
- WHAT WERE THE IMPACTS ON THE SOCIOSPHERE?
The impacts from the destruction on the Sociosphere are the lack of running water, food, and electricity, damaged roadways, a partially closed airport, damaged hospitals, demolished telecommunications, looting (stealing) items, and a loss of social supports. Due to severity of the destruction, from the earthquake and tsunami, about 1 350 people are already confirmed dead and a large number are injured or missing.
