Propaganda in 1984

Propaganda is a way of individual or a group of individuals to impose their point of view and beliefs. Rather than just communicating information, the goal of propaganda is to actively influence people’s ideas or behaviours. Propaganda appears and is the main part of the novel 1984. Reading the book, it’s hard not to notice slogans like “ignorance is strength”, “freedom is slavery”, “war is peace.” All three of these affirmations try to prove opposite things. Some of the propaganda techniques people could recognize in 1984 are stereotyping, least-of-evils, and fear. We can see stereotyping in calling normal citizens as “prols”.  Fear is shown through Big Brother watching over everyone and controlling everything. Another propaganda technique -least-of-evils is shown in Big Brother being better than no big brother. People think that without Big Brother they would live in poverty and without anything so he is least of evil.
