How does a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu practitioner’s understanding of physics (torque) make him or her more effective?
The use of torque physics is very prevalent in Jiu Jitsu. Since torque mainly deals with rotation and Jiu Jitsu deals with the rotating of joints, torque is the main physics concept in Jiu Jitsu. The competitors use torque to twist the opponents joints to cause pain and force them to submit, thus defeating the opponent. A clear understanding of torque and the concepts such as force, fulcrum, and levers that apply to it, are crucial to any practitioner of Jiu Jitsu; a Jiu Jitsu martial artist must combine all of these concepts together to submit their opponent.
Torque- the forces at play which cause objects to rotate.
Force- is something that can cause an object to change motion. Force has the ability to change the velocity of an object.
Fulcrum- a point on which a lever rests and pivots on.
Lever- a body that is pivoted on a fulcrum. It is capable of rotating on a pivot point.
