Matter Matters

Define the problem:
The problem is that it’s hard to explain matter, it might also be really boring to some people. There are so many concepts to matter: chemical change, changes of state, the particle model of matte, the kinetic molecular theory, qualitative and quantitative properties, and pure substances. My goal is to explain these concepts in an interesting and engaging way.

Dream:
Drawing an educational picture, that explains the concepts of matter.
Write short stories that explain the concepts of matter.
Make a video explaining the concepts of matter.

Design and deliver:
I chose to do 2 short stories, 2 pictures and 2 explanations.

One day Jimbo the egg was sitting in the refrigerator like always, when something happened. A giant hand grabbed him, he didn’t know what was happening but in a few moments he was cracked and laying on a giant black disk. The black disk started getting hotter until it was so hot that Jimbo started to change, he slowly started becoming white and solid, the black disk only got hotter and soon he was completely white and solid.
This is an example of a chemical change the egg was cooked and changed, it’s properties are different to that of an uncooked egg.

Billy was enjoying a juice box on a hot summer day when ice cream truck came around the corner, he put his his juice box down and ran to the truck for some ice cream. He bought a Popsicle and ate it. It was really good and Billy wanted another one but the ice cream truck was long gone. He wondered if he could make his own ice cream but it was already really late and he had to go to sleep. This night was particularly cold and Billy had to get another blanket to keep him warm. The next morning it was hot again and he went outside to wait for the ice cream truck. He saw his juice box on the porch and picked it up to go throw it out but he was surprised to find that the juice was frozen solid, he gave it a taste and it was really good, Billy just made his own Popsicle.
This is an example of a change of state, the juice froze and went from being a liquid state to a solid state.

Pure Substance: A pure substance is a material that is made up of only one type of particle examples of pure substance include: gold, salt, water.

Kinetic Molecular Theory: The kinetic molecular theory explains that all matters is made up of tiny particles or molecules that have spaces I between and always move. All these molecules have energy, molecules in a solid have little energy and move around a tiny bit, molecules in liquids have more energy than in solids and move around a lot more, and molecules in gases have the most energy and move around the most.

Debrief:
I think this project went pretty smoothly, I understood the concepts and thought of creative and engaging ways to show these concepts. But, I think I could’ve thought of a more creative way to show the concepts of Kinetic Molecular Theory and Pure Substances.
