Week 3 – math 10 – Identifying the parts of a triangle

Trigonometry

Trig is the study of triangles with “tri” meaning triangular, and “metry” is the measurements of it

When working with triangles it is important to identify the sides

as the word “tri” says, there are 3 sides, the Hypotenuse, The opposite side and the adjacent side

I chose this because it is important to understand how to use them and it makes working with trigonometry easier moving forward

Hypotenuse

the Hypotenuse is the longest side of the triangle and can be found when going opposite of the 90-degree corner of the triangle

you can find the hypotenuse by using the Pythagorean theorem  a^2 + b^2 = c^2

Hypotenuse - Wikipedia

 Adjacent

The adjacent side is the side of the triangle that has the missing value and the 90-degree angle θ - Wiktionary(this is a Theta it portrays a missing value.)

Opposite

The opposite side is the remaining and the side that has no theta just the 90-degree

Opposite (Key Stage 3)

Trig ratios

With side naming, there are also ratios needed to accompany them

a good phrase to remember is SOHCAHTOA meaning:

S = Sine OH = Opposite/Hypotenuse C = Cosine AH = Adjacent/Hypotenuse T = Tangent OA = Opposite/Adjacent

and it always adds up into 180
