Propaganda is a kind of communication that is trying to advertise one’s ideologies. Propaganda is very prominent throughout the novel 1984 with Ingsoc and Big Brother constantly reminding the inhabitants of Airstrip One that they are being watched. There are posters scattered around everywhere telling them that Big Brother is watching what they are doing, and it shows his face as an extra reminder that he is there. They also use the slogans “war is peace, freedom is slavery, ignorance is strength” which has many different kinds of propaganda hidden in it. They are cherry picking information about the topics brought up. Yes if there was a war, peace would proceed it, but they do not talk about all of the money and lost lives to achieve peace. That in itself is also a weak inference as Big Brother does not give the full story of what a war would be like. They also use a 2-minute hate in the novel that uses many different types of propaganda in it. They use Emmanuel Goldstein as a scapegoat to make Ingsoc and Big Brother look better in the public’s eyes. This also implants fear in the heads of the people participating in the hate as they do not want it to be their faces showing up during the hate and having everyone scream at them.
