A political spectrum is a way to organize and classify different political positions. A common way to identify a governments way of thinking is to determine if it is right wing or left wing. The difference is that the right wing wants to reserve traditional or existing conditions and find that there is no need to change something if it works. The left wing view things as you can always make something better, meaning that they embrace change.  Another way to identify a governments thinking of society control is categorized as authoritarian and  Libertarian. Authoritarian is wanting to have total control given to the government and libertarian is wanting to give control to the people. If I were to chose on the political quadrant scale where 1984‘s government stands, I would say it is in the colour blue, with authoritarian and right wing thinking. I put it into this category because having a totalitarian government was what every country had or wanted during the 1900’s (learning about it in socials class). Also, 1984’s government is the definition of authoritarian, the idea of giving total control to the government.

  1. Thank you for posting your response regarding your knowledge on the political spectrum, left and right wing politics, and authoritarian versus libertarian governments. I see you also made a prediction based on your knowledge, as to what government type Ingsoc is from the novel “1984.” Here are my observations on your work:

    – You explain the terms quite well in your own words, well done!
    – Although you bring up good arguments in your defence of where Ingsoc might be within the four quadrants and your evidence is convincing, based on George Orwell modelling Ingsoc (English Socialist Party) after a socialist party with elements of Stalinism, it should be in the top left quadrant.

Thanks for your insight and participation,
