Inquiry process – making a vest

For my inquiry project I chose to make a suit vest. So I looked through the patterns and found one for a vest. I then traced out the pattern onto transfer paper and then cut it and cut my fabric.

I had a few trouble with interfacing. There was one thick one that was good but sadly did not have enough for my project. I then tried a thinner one but that one did work as well and did not stick. Then we found one that was nice and the sticky part was obvious and it had instructions of how to transfer it to your fabric with the iron. Thankfully that one worked really well. I then basted the part I had to baste.

I just finished sewing my belt and turned it inside out. I just need to see it onto the back part of my vest.

I still have more to do in my project but sadly do not have enough time. However with the time I had I learned how to use interfacing, I have better adapted my pattern reading skills and I getting better at using the sewing machine.

Apron

I have finished my apron and I really like the outcome. For my apron I decide to have a round bottom which made sewing that quite a challenge. For this project I learned how to use the serger. Which was pretty easy and fixed my raw edges. Sewing the straps was probably the easiest part. Overall this project was quite easy however I did run into some small problems. The fabric that I had originally chosen for my straps was too small so I had to find new fabrics that looked good with the rest of the apron. Still the fabric was not as long was I had hoped but still long enough for my to tie it. During the process of sewing the hip straps the needle on the sewing machine broke and now I know what to do to fix it. While adding the lace to do apron I had to think of how I would like it to be sewn and I decided I would like to sew it in a way that won’t show the thread. So I tucked it then sewed and then flipped it back over after. I am really proud of my apron. It looks really cute and I really like it.

Textiles Week 15

This week for textiles I am planning on starting to cut up my fabric and sew my apron together. I have looked for inspiration so that I can get a feel of how I wanted it to look. I have already picked out my fabric and I have drawn my croquis and the apron. I just need to draw it flat then cut it up and sew it all up together.

Trashion Fashion Final

I finished making my trashion fashion which was a tote bag made from my mom’s old scarves. I made this bag without a pattern  and did it by examining and comparing the tote bag I have at home. I looked at the sewing and the seam and tried to figure out how it was made. I used two different scarves one for the inside and the outside. I tried to make it a reversible bag but I couldn’t figure it out. I gathered my fabric and placed it and measured how long I wanted it to be. I cut out my fabric and the fabric I’d use for the arm handle. I sewed the different fabrics together for the arm handle. After I had two arm handles I started focusing of the rest of the bag. When I was done putting the different fabrics together Mx Vittie helped me turn my handles inside out so that the seams wouldn’t show. Then I sewed the handles onto the bag. And then I turned it inside out and looked at final project. One of the hardest part of making the bag was that I had to be really careful. I could not make mistakes because if I did I would have to use a seam ripper and I would need to be extra carful with the seam ripper to not rip or damage the fabric because the fabric is delicate. The bag turned out nice however the handles were a little too long witch made the tote bag longer than it is normally. Still I am really proud of how it turned out.

Week 10 – Textiles

I finished my pants last week. My plan for this week is to work on my trashion fashion. I am thinking of making a bag or a skirt out of my mom’s old scarves as she was planning on throwing them away. I am really excited to see the outcome and how its gonna look.

Doll Pants Final

I finished making my doll pants last Thursday. Some of the struggles I had were the pockets and putting in the elastic. I didn’t have a hard time sewing the two front sides together and the two backs sides together. I have had to redo my pockets and even when putting the back and front together. I noticed after I sewed the front and back together that there were some holes left on the side and that it didn’t catch and sew the piece of fabric. I wished that I didn’t not spend so much time on the pockets, especially since I did it right the first time. I also wished that I had cut the right amount of elastic. I ended up cutting more than the needed 5 inch which ended up making the back side a lot bigger. But other than that, I am happy about the outcome.

Textiles Week 8

This week I finished sewing the pockets for my pants and have sewed the front sections together. I ran into a few problems with the pockets and and had to redo it multiple times because I sewed it wrong. Finally I was able to finish the pockets.

I had to redo the pockets because I accidentally sewed the pocket into the pants instead of sewing both parts of the pocket together. When I got that right I was trying to figure out how to make into pockets and put it into the back. Thankfully I got it and did it right in the end however I am a little disappointed that I spent a whole week trying to figure out how to sew pockets.

My goal for this week is to spend more time on my inquiry project and to work on the back of the pants.

Textiles Week 7

Last week I was finally able to start using the sewing machine and sewed the first step. I realized what I was doing wrong and why I couldn’t figure out how to work on the machine. Now that I know what I did wrong I will make sure to never make that same mistake again. I am hoping to sew more and get pretty far onto my pants. For my inquiry project I am hoping to expand my knowledge and learn more on crochet.

Doll Pants prototyping and testing

So for this part of the doll pants I had to highlight the grain line and notches on the pattern paper and then cut out the part of the pants from the pattern paper and then pin the paper onto my selected fabric before I cut the fabric out.

I didn’t struggle with this part of the project, I mean it was just cutting paper really, but I did forget to draw and cut a notch so I when I went to cut my fabric I had to cut the notch after I pinned the paper on fabric. However I did find cutting the notches on fabric was hard because it was a little hard to cut a triangle on my fabric and it didn’t look nice when I was done cutting. I cut each part for the pants out of my fabrics. And then I pinned the pockets on to the front of my pants and started to get ready to sew it together.

Week 6

This week I plan to start sewing parts of my pants and learn to adapt and get used to the sewing machine. I hope to have sewn the pockets together by the end of this week. My plan for my inquiry project is to keep developing and learning basic skills of crochet.
