Equilibrium Project – Physics 12
I worked with Irene and Amaris in a group to make a Winter Wonderland themed project using equilibrium concepts. In this Equilibrium project, my group and I created a balancing act on a clothing hanger including different materials/components, including a present, snowflakes, and snowmen.
We were successful in creating a balance so that, after considering the centre of gravity, the total anticlockwise torque equals the clockwise torque. Although the overall left and right masses are somewhat different (0.1014 kg vs. 0.0951 kg), the hanger maintains its balance because of the difference in distance to the fulcrum. To account for the mass difference, we were able to determine that the centre of gravity is 0.00375m to the left.
The two snowmen differed by 0.01g, which looked like too little to make a difference, but the grammes kept shifting each time we attempted to measure them on the scale. However, the wrong equipment or technique used to measure the mass could be the cause of mistake. It is possible that they were each slightly off, which would have prevented that part of our project from being perfectly balanced even though technically it makes sense for them to be equal in mass and distance.
Français 12- Reflection on essential skills (Debate)
What was the most challenging element of the debate project for you personally? Did you overcome that challenge and if so, how did you do so?
The most challenging part of the debate was finding a good article about my topic. There weren’t too many that went in dept about it in French. It took a couple days to find a detailed one that included all aspects about the topic and explained it in a easy way for the class. Another big challenge was trying to finish the debate with the time we had. I feel like at the beginning we were given so much time to do the introduction but that time could have been used towards the entire debate in general. To resolve this challenge I just tried my best to make a to do list of what needed to be done in what order so I would use all my time in class wisely.
How did this project (as presenter or listener) change your perspectives?
This project changed my perspectives on certain subjects when I was a listener because during some of the debates my opinion was changed by the people who presented their ideas. It made me have an open mind seeing both sides of everyone’s debate. When I had to be on the other side of the debate then what I have originally picked I had a lot more ideas then I originally thought of.
What were you most proud of in your project?
I was proud of my oral part of the project, the presentation where I had to state my argument along with my debate partner. I practiced quite a few times but I was very nervous and stressed because I was away for a couple days before so I thought I wasn’t prepared enough.

« I can ask open-ended questions, explore, gather information and experiment purposefully to develop options »
In class I am always asking questions for clarification or if I do not understand something. I ask questions to my classmates or to my teacher when I need it. I am always exploring new things in science such as the tools we have been using for all the projects and assignments. For our element sway project it was my first time ever using sway so I really got to explore and enjoy trying it out and using it. I also explored on using Minecraft education for our solution influency project. It was my first time using Minecraft and I was really happy being able to explore and expand on my Minecraft usage and I will keep on doing that for future projects. In class I have been able to gather many cites for reliable information. I love being able to explore different parts of nature and gathering information from there. When we went to the Traboulay Poco Trail we were able to gather our information from outside and I had lots of fun doing that.
« I can take risks and recognize that I may not be immediately successful »
In class I have taken plenty of risks and because of them I have learnt so much more. When I take risks I know I might not always be successful but because of the risks I take, I gain new possibilities for the future. Some of the times that I take risks it doesn’t turn out exactly how I planned but when I work hard it always turns out good in the end and I’m always proud of myself. When I take risks I get better feedback from others and it helps me grow and develop more as a learner.
« I can develop body of creative work overtime in an area of interest or passion »
When I was working on my science influency project I picked a topic that I was interested in and I felt passionate about. I was passionate about this topic and it made me want to explore and research more about it. I was very interested on how to use Minecraft to show my research and knowledge. I was able to build and create something I showed plenty of interest in and researched about.

Core competencies Self assessment – science 9
I can interact with others and the environment respectfully and thoughtfully. In class, I share my ideas and thoughts with my classmates and teachers. I also listen to what they have to say, give my kind feedback and receive feedback with an open mind. When receiving feedback I write it down and apply it to future assignments. I encourage my peers to do their best and help them with any questions that they might have. I always try my best to leave a positive comment on what my peers say and do.
I contribute to group activities that make my classroom, school, community, or natural world a better place. In group activites/projects, I always share my input and ideas with others while trying to expand on them with help. I try to include everyone as much as possible when doing group work and try and get to know my classmates better. When contributing to group activities, I try to encourage and support my classmates with the decisions and ideas they share.
I can take thoughtful actions to influence positive, sustainable change. When I take action in class, I always think of the influence and impact it can leave on others. I try my best to leave a positive influence/impact in class and in my environment. When taking action, I think of ways to contribute positively to my community and environment by resolving problems calmly and peacefully while developing healthy relationships with others.
So far in science 9, I think I have accomplished so much from when I started. I now know a lot more about the periodic table, what an atom and ion is and a lot more. I have developed a lot during science from when I began in September. At first I had no idea what anything we learnt was and I was excited to learn and at the moment I know lots of new concepts and can identify what we learnt. My goals for the rest of semester 1 is to keep on trying to learn, ask questions if I don’t understand and try my best to keep organized.
