A Fresh Look at the Periodic Table

Our periodic table is like the original table because we found that the original table had lots of patterns and was easy to read. The one thing that sets our table apart is that our table is built in the form of a cylinder because we wanted to represent that even though Potassium and Argon are on completely different sides, they are very similar. That is why using a cylinder would represent that it is a continuous table and not a rectangle. We moved a few of the elements around because we found that moving those elements would simplify the table and make it easier to read and comprehend. We have many patterns such as the further down the periodic table the amount of shells in the atom increases. Another pattern is that the spiral of atoms is in order of the atomic number. Also, another pattern is that the right side of the periodic table has more electrons than the ones on the left. All of the atoms in a family are colored the same so that it is easier to understand which element is part of a certain family.

New Periodic Table

Define

Our way of looking at the problem was that it was very difficult to find things on the periodic table and we would always mix up which element is which.

Discover

How can we make the periodic table better without ruining the other aspects and patterns of the normal periodic table? What aspects of the periodic table do we want to change and why? How can we improve the periodic table? What aspects should we keep?

Dream

The periodic table tells you many patterns such as how many electrons are in the valence shell; how many shells are in the element and other useful things. I could rearrange the elements so that it is separated by its properties, if it’s a metal or its atomic mass. I feel that using a cylinder would be the most effective because than it would look like a continuous table and not a rectangle. You could use color to represent the different families or if it is a gas or metal.

Design

Our plan would be to use a cylinder because it would be the most effective because the periodic table would look like a continuous table and not a rectangle that ends at the side of the paper.

Debrief

I could have added more patterns and changed up certain elements of the new periodic table. Another thing I could have done would to have changed up the periodic table more and be more creative and developed more ideas. Overall, I felt that I had some great aspects but there are other aspects that I could have improved.

  1. Great explanation of how you used the solution fluency to re-imagine the periodic table. Good job including media showing what your new periodic table looks like. What a great idea to incorporate the periodic table into a cylinder. Excellent reflection on your product and the solution fluency process. How do you think your redesigned periodic table can help Science students understand the elements better?
