Gene Therapy

Gene therapy is an experimental technique to replace a mutated gene with a functioning one to treat or prevent the disease, which is a very different method than the normal drug based techniques. The process begins with finding the infection, then the gene transplant begins. Though, this is a great option of treatment for several different diseases (such as inherited disorders, types of cancer and certain viral infections). It is still being tested today and can be risky but it’s a good option for diseases with no other cure. It has progressed in 2009 by researchers using this technique to cure an inherited disease, ALD, instead of ineffective drug therapies that have been used for years. This way of biotechnology is changing the world by healing one disease to another and saving more lives affected.

The Book The Help is one of my favourite books. The story was set in Jackson, Mississippi in the 1960’s as it follows the story of two maids and their conflicts during this time of history. It taught me that people with privilege need to realize the power they hold in society and use it for the good, to help others in need.  The main characters taught me to be brave enough to stand up for yourself and others. To be equal.
