Digital Footprint

Digital Footprint

  1. How might your digital footprint affect your future opportunities?

Our digital life has made a massive change to our lives both negatively and positively. Our digital footprint, a train of information left by us users and we will never be able to just get rid of it. I don’t think us users pay attention to the negatives of online medias. For example, identity theft. Let’s say you’re trying to apply for collage/university/jobs. They could easily look at your online/digital life, and online history. Someone could’ve easily used your personal identifying information, done something online using your identity, and all that, could easily cause you to not get into the school/get the job you wanted. That’s why you need to keep your personal information kept safe. If you have a bad photo or video of you doing bad things on social media, they could easily see it and base their first impression of you on those photos and videos. That would lead to you not getting the job you wanted, even after all your hard work put into your applications and resumes.  Posts, comments, tags, and more. They could easily base you off your digital footprint. Even after you try to delete anything bad, there will always still be copies. That’s why you need to keep your digital footprint on a positive state.

2, Describe at least three strategies that you can use to keep your digital footprint appropriate and safe.

A strategy you could use to keep your digital footprint appropriate and safe is to think before you post. Think carefully about what you send, post, share etc. for example, inappropriate comments. Do you really want people to view you that way? many people will view that comment and you should also be mindful of others digital footprints. how will that comment affect them? So think before you act. Don’t post anything you will regret later into the future. People will be reading that comment, think about whether its safe to be put out there, the people that would be seeing it, and if its safe. Keep your information to our accounts safe. Try using private accounts and don’t accept/follow people you don’t know. Use unique passwords that you will remember, not common ones that can be easily guessed. Don’t over share. For example, trusting people with your personal information such as, users, passwords, address and more. Lastly, you need to remember that posting is like publishing forever. Nothing ever completely disappears when online. So, you have to be aware of what you’re posting.

3. What information did you learn that you could pass on to other students? How would you go about telling them?

This project taught me a lot on digital footprints, I started this project not knowing a lot on them but know I know that they make such an impact on our online lives and that we need to be aware of what we post. Something I think other students should know, is that nothing ever disappears when online. That’s why they should be careful of what they share, comment, send, and post. think before you post? is it safe for yourself and others? who will be seeing it? is it something you’ll regret in the future? They shouldn’t post anything they will regret in the future because that potentially effect your reputation. Even if you do end up posting something and hen you delete it because you start to regret it, its never fully gone. They should know that they should only post things that will affect them positively affect them. Students should also remember to keep personal information private and control your privacy setting on social media and websites. They should remember to do this so that they don’t get hacked in the near future. Lastly, one more thing to remember is to be mindful of other people’s digital footprints. This includes asking whether or not you should tag them in photos, asking for permission before you post a picture of someone, etc. to share this information with other students and peers, I’ll go about having them read my blog, and talking to them about digital footprints. but the main thing I think other students and peers should be aware of, is to think before you post.
