Book 2: The seven husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid

Summary: Hollywood cinema legend Evelyn Hugo. Nearly as much as her great film career, she became well-known for her scandalous personal life and her seven marriages. Evelyn is currently 79 and somewhat reclusive.

So when Monique Grant, a relatively unknown magazine reporter, is given the chance to do an exclusive interview, she seizes the opportunity. She learns that this isn’t your typical interview after meeting Evelyn. Evelyn Hugo is now prepared to reveal every detail of her wild and glitzy existence. Monique learns a startling secret about Evelyn as she digs deeper into the actress’ life and is forced to face upsetting realities about herself and her relationships.

Throughout the book, readers see how Evelyn navigates the challenges of being a woman in a male-dominated industry and how she grapples with issues of race, sexuality, and personal identity.

What I loved: With evocative descriptions of the style, music, and celebrity society of the day, the book immediately captures the glitz and charm of classic Hollywood. Yet as the novel goes on, it becomes obvious that Evelyn’s life is much more complicated than first appears, and readers are led on a trip that examines intricate issues of love, identity, and power relations.

Prepare to be absolutely mesmerized by the unparalleled storytelling in this remarkable book because that was something I loved most. Its incredible representation, embracing diversity in race and sexuality, elevates the narrative to new heights. The protagonist’s profound connections with characters like Harry and Cecilia bring a delightful richness to the story, with Harry becoming a personal favorite.

As the plot unfolds, the book fearlessly confronts a multitude of social issues that were even more significant during the historical periods it explores, including the complexities of interracial relationships, the exploration of gay and bisexual identities, and a searing critique of misogyny. Brace yourself for the unexpected twists that will leave you breathless, as this book defies conventions and delivers a wholly unique experience unlike any other.

Impact on teenagers: Because “The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo” explores complicated issues like love, identity, and power relationships, it has the potential to have a profound effect on teenagers. The book offers a provocative look at Hollywood’s glitzy exterior and how it frequently conceals the realities of life in the spotlight.

The portrayal of strong, multidimensional female characters is one of the novel’s most powerful elements. Particularly strong and vibrant, Evelyn Hugo challenges conventional gender roles and expectations. Teenagers can be motivated by her narrative to question cultural norms and expectations and to pursue their aspirations despite any challenges they may encounter.
