To me, the first image represents entering a whole new world or finding out new things about yourself. In this art class, I want to enter a whole new world of art and try new medias that I have never done before. Up until now I have only done 2D art classes such as drawing and painting. Those are the two main types of art I’ve been doing for most of my life. But now I finally get to experiment with 3-D art, something I’ve never done before. In this class I hope to learn how to work with clay, papier-mâché, and other things that will help me learn and enjoy the whole concept of 3-D art.
VESSLES BRAIN STORMING
2a)
Brain Storming:
Something I find precious is nature. When it comes to painting or drawing I really like connecting it to nature. A lot of the personal paintings that I’ve done for myself involves that. What I want to do with this vessel project is somehow incorporate leaves vines and flowers onto my vessel.
For my nature themed vessel, I’m thinking of making a cup connected to a tray of some sort and having vines and flowers riding up the side of the cup, and the bottom tray is going to be covered in 3D flowers or it’s going to have a flower print on it. I am going to be hand making this a vessel.
For my second vessel project I am thinking of making some sort of bowl with a cool print on it, as well as a cool painting on it. I haven’t fully decided on colours but I am thinking of blending a couple colours and making an ombre affect when painting.
2b) mask process
This was my vessel before it was put into the kiln. This is the second vessel that I created last minute, its just a small heart shaped trinket tray. I plan to paint it either pink or light blue but the more that I think of it the more I’m leaning towards light pink.
One thing I think I did well on was the shape of the heart. It took a while to make because the clay kept ripping and falling towards the sides, causing the heart shape to be wider than I wanted it to be.
One thing I believe I didn’t do too well was the smoothness of the vessel. My nails kept getting in the way, i had the same problem for my last vessel. In order to fix this issue, I’m planning to sand the areas that aren’t smooth in hopes of making it smoother when it’s out of the kiln.
this is the second vessel I created. It’s a little heart shaped tray/container. I haven’t completely finished it yet, but I’m planning to continue it after completing my painting for my reconciliation project because that assignment has more of strict deadline.
im planning to paint this vessel different shades of pink, starting in the middle of it and creating a ripple affect with the different shades of pink.
one thing I believe I did well for this vessel was the shape. I feel like I made it relatively even. I made this vessel a lot faster than I made the last one, considering it was easier to make.
one thing I think I should’ve done better on was the smoothness of this vessel. It was a little rushed, and like my last vessel that I created, i had long acrylic nails which kept getting in the way and creating dents. I started sanding it a bit but I need to continue so that I can reach the level of smoothness i want. I learned that it’s a lot easier to do work in this class with shorter nails.
this was the first painting that I started for the reconciliation project. It consists of a fire like sunset, a tree, water, and a turtle in the middle. The tree represents the roots of indigenous history and the turtle represents turtle island. I decided to make the sunset look like fire to represent how indigenous history pretty much went up to flames, was burned, and covered up throughout the years. It’s just now that we’re starting to learn what happened all those years back.
one thing I think I did well was the color and detail put into the tree. I like the different shades of brown that I used. One thing I don’t really like is the shapes of certain things on the painting and how all of the colours go together. I think that if I work on it more, maybe add other colours, work on the details of some components of the piece of art and maybe add to the background because it looks a little plain to me.
i didn’t really like where the painting was going so I decided to restart and make something new.
(April 4 – April 8)
The new painting consists of a night time scene, a river, trees, turtles, and a raven. The turtle represents turtle island, teaching us about patience, stability, grounding, and earth connection. The raven ribs a fierce and crafty bird that widely figures in native mythology as a mischief maker. For some, the raven represents creation, transformation, knowledge, prestige, as well as the complexity of nature and the subtlety of truth.
one thing I thought I did well on was the detail in the sky and the trees. I’ve always loved painting nature so I’ve been having fun with this painting that I started. One thing I think I could do better on is the detail in the water. It’s just a plain blue as of now but I want to add more detail.

MASK PROCESS
DRAFT PROCESS:
May 16 – May 20th
On the fist two days we had created a chart to show the seen vs unseen sides of ourselves. (may 16th and 17th).
this was my chart:
seen: artist, creative, style, makeup, looks
unseen: insecure, secretive, trustworthy, personality
I decided to focus on makeup/looks for my seen side of my mask and the secretive and personality for my unseen side.
Next we had to choose two animals or two different things to represent both the seen and unseen sides.
May 17th – 19th
I came up with many designs over the course of 2.5 blocks but I limited it to my favorite one by the end which was a blue jay and peacock.
For my seen side, I choose to create a peacock. I find peacocks to be such beautiful birds. What’s shown and seen by others is my makeup which I associate with beauty, that’s why I chose that bird to represent makeup/looks.
For my unseen side, I chose to create a blue jay. Blue jays are among natures most gifted liars. lies and secrets are meant to be hidden and not shown. I tend to keep a lot to myself, which is why I chose a blue jay to represent that unseen side of me.
I wanted to keep a bird theme for my mask, by choosing these two birds I got to do that while also keeping a similar color palette for both sides considering they’re both blue.
