The Ocean
By: Damian Dodge
The ocean is a place of second chances.
It is a place where you can be reborn,
It is a place that leads into the afterlife,
It is a place of joy and wonder.
The Ocean is a place where you can wash away your previous life
A place where you can start anew.
A place where there is hope
A place where dreams come true
The Ocean is a place of new horizons
A place where you can find peace
A place where you can explore
A place where you can discover
The beauty of peace.
The radiance of the sun.
The bridge of life.
And the freedom of life.
Damian Dodge’s poem The Ocean is about how the ocean is related to second chances. The poet used many literary devices like metaphors, repetition, hyperbole’s, etc to display the theme of the poem. A quote from the poem that shows this is “A place where you can start anew.” This is true because the poet is using a metaphor to describe how the ocean is a place where you can start anew/ start a new life which is related to second chances in life. This can be true through a behavior change or when you move somewhere else since you are starting in a new area which you know nothing about/ starting another life in an unfamiliar place. Another place where the poem refers to the ocean being related to second chances is when the poet says “it is a place where you can be reborn.” like the first quote I mentioned this one talks about being reborn which is related to getting a second chance in your life since when you are reborn you are thought to be different from your old self. The insight of life from the poem is that many things can be related to each other/ interconnectedness. Since the ocean’s denotative meaning is not related to death but its connotative meaning is related to the ocean since the ocean in many religions is thought to be a bridge into the afterlife. In the end what I personally took away from the poem is that everything can be compared to something like the ocean to second chances.
The Bird by Patrick Lane
The Bird by Patrick Lane is my favorite poem out of the poetry package because of many reasons. Firstly I love the use of a hyperbole in line 5 and 6. “You wanted to cage a bird in your hands and learn to fly.” The reason I like this hyperbole is because it displays human greed since the human in this scenario wants to take something from the bird. This line is also relevant in our world since when we cage birds we get rid of their freedom since when you think of freedom you normally think of the ability to fly since your movement isn’t restrained by gravity. Another thing I liked about this poem is the metaphor at the end of the poem. “A bird is a poem that talks about the end of cages.” The reason I like this part of the poem is because it is very vivid imagery and is also relevant in our world like the first quote. What I got out of this phrase is that poetry is free like a bird since a poem can be anything from closed to free verse poems/ describing indescribable things. Which is similar to the freedom birds have since you can use your words freely with poetry to describe indescribable things while birds aren’t restrained by the power of gravity. In conclusion the Bird by Patrick Lane is my favorite poem out of all the poems we went over because of its relevance to our world.
