What we need to do to reduce stereotypes and inaccurate media representation. The public needs to support Indigenous creators. If possible, raise money or provide funding for Indigenous filmmakers, writers, etc. Ensure we create opportunity for Indigenous voices to be heard, especially in media. Help educate the public on the culture and history of Indigenous people. Help others learn to recognize and analyze stereotypes and create classes, especially for media creators to help educate others on the correct ways to acknowledge and represent Indigenous communities. When Indigenous people are incorrectly portrayed, challenge the media to fix their mistakes and encourage the online creators/producers to ensure accurate and respectful representation. Allowing Indigenous people to be represented in all roles including the roles of actors, directors, producers, etc. Indigenous people should be working directly with the media to ensure they are telling their stories in a respectful way. By taking these steps, we help reduce harmful stereotypes, support Indigenous communities and their work and ensure the media is showing the truth, being respectful and understanding towards Indigenous communities and all they’ve done for us. As we grow old, I’ll remember and carry the importance of representation, fairness and truth with me. Understanding how media influences and effects will stay with me as I grow up. I will try to challenge stereotypes and search for the truth and real voices of the stories.
