Community Connection

Hi Dalia!

What are some challenges you face from day to day as your role as a veterinarian?

The biggest challenges I face are communication with the clients and having people refuse care because they cannot afford it. Veterinary medicine is a private practice so people must pay for all the treatments and consult with the veterinarians.

Why are you passionate about your job or role?

I am passionate about end of life care and helping people come to the decision and say goodbye to their beloved pets when it is time to humanely euthanize them. It is a very difficult decision to make and I feel as though I can be their guide and source of comfort during this process.

Can you explain your roles and responsibilities with your current position?

My roles are performing routine surgeries such as spays and neuters and removing cancerous lumps. I also do medical consultations with our clients where I interpret the pets lab work and aid people in deciding the best treatment plan for their pets. Vaccination and puppy/kitten care is another big part of my job.

What obstacles have you faced to get you where you are today?

One major obstacle I have faced is self-doubt. Vet school is extremely difficult and working in the real world as a vet is even more difficult! Finding ways to gain confidence and be easy on yourself when you make mistakes or feel unsure about your competency is key to being resilient and persevering through a difficult or stressful day.

What advice would you pass on to someone interested in what you are doing?

Although veterinary medicine is a passion and lifestyle in itself, it is important to have passions outside of work. It is also extremely important to have coping mechanisms for stress.

What is the most rewarding part of your job?

The most rewarding part of the job is seeing a vast improvement in an animal’s condition after implementing your treatment plan as well as when an owner really appreciates your help. It makes my day when I get a card or a cookie from a client!

Good luck with the project Dalia let me know if you have any more questions!

Sincerely,

Dr. Cecilia Krogsgaard-Sanchez

Roles and Responsibilities:

Veterinarians give advice on feeding, hygiene, housing, and general animal care, as well as preventing, diagnosing, and treating diseases and disorders in animals. They can also perform operations. Animals’ health issues and requirements are met by veterinarians, who aid them. They perform dental care, vaccinations, and other medical procedures on animals. Additionally, veterinarians supply emergency services, including surgeries. They treat ill or injured animals and diagnose and control diseases. As part of the treatment, they may prescribe medications and conduct diagnostic scans. Veterinarians may also dress wounds and treat fractures. They give owners of animals advice on the best way to care for their animals.

Why I chose to interview this individual:

I chose to interview this individual due to my love and passion towards animals. I believe this job is extremely rewarding. You can relieve the suffering of animals that may have had traumatic injuries as well as seeing the happiness and appreciation on the owner’s face. You get to connect with your community. As a veterinarian, you are often interacting with others. You would have to communicate with the owners about their pet’s status, treatment plans, and procedures. Overall, I believe veterinarians make a positive change in our world.

What you learned from the interview and how that connects to your passions/interests:

I learned that a lot goes into becoming a veterinarian. That although this job may be rewarding, a lot of effort and problem-solving are involved. There is a lot of stress involved in being a veterinarian. The life of someone else’s animal is in your hands. Everyone makes mistakes but if you want to be a veterinarian you must be cautious because one mistake could cost the life of an animal. I also learned that some individuals experience self-doubt. Even if you have taken years of veterinary school, you may still not believe you are good enough. You have to fight through all the challenges thrown at you and continue to become your best self. This connects to my passions and interests because I experience self-doubt all the time. Although it may not be as serious, most people still experience it. While doing sports I may experience self-doubt because I’m afraid I am not good enough to be on a specific team or that I don’t deserve to be on this team. I also enjoy animals a lot. I have cats at home, and I believe they help comfort and distract me when needed.

What opportunities this interview opened up for you:

This interview allowed me to connect with my community. I discussed with new faces their role as veterinarians and their opinions on their job. We emailed back and forth about it and asked for clarification if needed. Another opportunity this opened for me was to get out of my comfort zone. It took courage to email someone I do not know and interview them about their job. I just had to realize that this person does not know me personally and the worst response I could get was no response. I went out of my comfort zone and succeeded in what needed to be done. Hopefully, this will give me confidence in the future to put myself out there and not be afraid to be told No.
