Yesterday we got an overview of Jewish faith and culture.  Prejudice and discrimination against Jewish people, known as anti-Semitism, has been occurring for thousands of years.  Criticism of Jewish self determination and statehood is known as anti-Zionism.

  1. Are Anti-Zionist beliefs anti-Semitism?  Let’s watch this video for context.
  2. In groups of 4, students will each explore a document to uncover the history of anti-Semitism and its impacts on Jewish people.
    a) In the OneNote activity, take notes from your chosen resource
    b) Share amongst the group and add additional learning to your chart (colour code according to resource)

Today we begin our next unit, A Just Peace for Palestine and Israel

This unit will explore the history of the region and events up until October 2023 as events are still unfolding in the region.

  1. Video – Understanding the Historical Thinking Skill of Ethical Judgement – this will be key in the unit
  2. Practice looking for ethical judgement words/language
  3. Exploring the concept of “facts, perspective, narrative, your truth”
  4. Practice applying this concept with a video clip from Trevor Noah

b) Let’s look at the plan – did they get it right?
c) A Squamish man’s response to the federal governments plan

Lastly, we will look at two cities in Europe that have solved homelessness.  Yes it is possible!  How did they do it?

We will begin with a land acknowledgement.

We have looked at the causes of homelessness, heard voices from the community, and explored the current statistics in BC and across the country.  How can we solve homelessness?

The Housing First policy is a comprehensive solution to homelessness that takes into consideration all the causes, limits barriers to accessing housing, and places the individual at the center of the plan.  Let’s watch this introductory video.
