Currents from the Kitchen- Lab

Purpose:

Which fruit will produce the most electric voltage?

Hypothesis:

When the most acidic fruit/vegetables is plugged in, it will produce the highest voltage.

Materials:

  • 1 Voltmeter
  • 2 Wires
  • 1 Nail
  • 1 Copper strip
  • Minimum of 3 fruit/vegetables

Procedure:

  1. Prepare all materials
  2. Hook one wire to the positive outlet (red nob) hook the other wire to the third negative outlet (3rd black nob)
  3. Stick the copper strip and the nail into fruit 1.
  4. Connect one wire to the copper strip and one on the nail.
  5. Then measure the voltage and observe.
  6. Then repeat with other fruits.

Reasoning:

Strong acids have more electrolytes, and stronger acids can be an ion producer creating a voltage. So, therefore fruits/vegetables with the most acidity will create the bigger voltage.

Fruit Voltage
Apple .1 volts
Orange .3 volts
Nectarine .05 volts

Observation:

When we connected the wire, nothing happened. We got new wires and it started moving

Very small movement

The orange had the largest voltage

Conclusion

The orange had the largest voltage. Out of the tree fruits we use the orange is the most acidic so I will say my hypothesis is correct in saying the most acidic fruit would have the larges voltage. I am interested in using different fruits or vegetables.

  1. The electrons flow throw the fruit because of the copper, and acid involved in the set up.
  2. Independent variable: fruit
  3. Dependent variable: voltmeter
  4. Controlled variable: zinc nail and copper
  5. Use multiple fruits at once or use different types of fruit
  6. The function of the wires. We cannot tell if the wire is working and if it is not witch wire.
  7. You could use the fruit to power light when there is a power outage

Minecraft Solution Fluency

Define:

I have decided to focus on how climate change affects the coral reefs. Coral reefs provide a home for 25% of marine life, so they are vital to keep to marine animal’s environment safe. Coral reefs are not only benefiting marine life it is also important for us humans. They are sources of income through tourism and fishing. Coral reefs suffer from land-based pollution travelling into our oceans. And overfishing, overfishing can damage the habitat. But the main thing I tackled was the temperature. Climate change is causing the ocean to warm and the coral bleaching because of the stress put on them. Many people don’t know that coral is actually an animal not a plant, so they have there own biome that they need to be in like many other species.

Discover:

I’ve discovered some studies on this subject that have different solutions. Such as an article that says “Corals in their natural reef habitat are already a gift for us to enjoy. Don’t give them as presents.” It essentially says that harvesting coral to sell for decor or jewelry is thinning the coral population more and more. They are also creating a sun shield to protect and restore the great barrier reef. I also found a nursery in the water that helped me modify my prototype, where they actually take coral fragments that broke off during storms and growing them in a “coral daycare” and replanting them in places that need them most.

Dream:

  • Grow corals in a safe environment
  • Create filters for the swampy or polluted water, so it does not stop the corals from getting sunlight (Not too much sun light thought.)
  • Making sure people know that coral is an animal in the ocean not just something to decorate without jewelry.
  • The less co2 in the air helps the pH balance in the ocean which help the coral grow, so more trees ect… to reduce co2
  • Create a protected area for the coral reefs.

Deliver:

So, my prototype is made completely out of reused materials, and it is a small sanctuary. I found an article that says broken stubs of coral of a certain size is not dead and in the right environment can grow into a full-grown coral and can be used to create a new reef in a preferred area or putting them into a previous reef that needs more heathy growing coral.

Essentially you would put the stub of coral in the sand, and it will grow up. Also, it helps that the marine life can access the sanctuary. I have put small filters at the sides to make sure the water stays clean and it is completely safe for the animals around them. There is a sun shield to protect it from the heat to stop the bleaching but so it can get the right amount of sun for it to thrive.

Debrief

My sanctuary for the coral is made from environmentally friendly materials. It also does not harm any parts of the reefs keeping it safe. I think I could have gone into more details for my prototype and thought it throw better. But overall I think this invention can be used in the environment and a different base for the same idea is already out there.

Climate in Canada-Prairies

Causes:

The Canadian prairies have been a recognized area for climate change. The main causes making the prairie’s a hotspot for climate change are their high latitude and location in the middle of North America. The summers will become warmer and drier. The winters will become warmer and wetter. Flooding becomes a problem in the spring with the winters becoming warmer and wetter. The changes in precipitation in the summer could lead to state of drought. The effects of climate changes can be unpredictable, and anything could happen.

Effects:

The effects of climate change are infinite. Small communities need a source of water, a small body of water or well, but with the risk droughts it is more likely their water sources will dry out. Without the water animals that live in these areas will have a harder time surviving, and people will have less resources/food to survive. With the rising temperatures humans are more susceptible to illnesses such as heat exhaustion or heat stroke. The warmer temperatures can be good for growing some crops, same with wet weather, but this takes away resources for living and can possibly lead to a shortage of food.

Modeling Mitosis

The reproduction of a cell

Interphase-

Interphase is the first part of the cycle when the cell makes copies of it’s DNA.

Prophase-

This part of the cycle is when the DNA fibers pare up with each other and turn into chromosomes.

Then the chromosomes attach to the spindle fibers on either side.

Metaphase-

The chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell.

Anaphase-

This part of the cycle is when the spindle fibers pull the pared up chromosomes apart.

Telophase-

The cell starts to tear into two new cells.

Cytokinesis-

This is when the cell divides into two new cells and the cycle restarts.
