Mr. Rothenberger’s Marketing and Promotion class is researching and brainstorming merchandise for the 2021-2022 Riverside Secondary school year.

“The process all started with a grand vision of having a place where Riverside students could come to purchase school merch and other convenience items, and also have a place to hang out at lunch, etc.,” said Richard Rothenberger, Marketing and Promotion teacher at Riverside Secondary.

The lounge in room 224 already has stock, “you should come by and check it out anytime before period 2, at lunch, or after period 5.  We have merch on display and ready for purchase, with another large order on the way,” said Rothenberger.

With the new year came new options. In addition to hoodies and crewnecks, they started selling camping blankets, wind breakers, toques, varsity jackets, and other miscellaneous items explained Rothenberger.

The lounge has been approved to use tap to pay making it ever easier for students to pay.

The lounge is adamant about staying open all year long with popular items available to purchase. Although there will be a schoolwide online order system, so that parents and students can pay remotely.

“We would like to help any group within the school that is looking to provide product or raise funds by making our space available as a hub for all purchases in the school,” said Rothenberger.

The students have set up an account on Instagram @theriversidelounge_ with updates on new products, promotion, giveaways, and to provide feedback Rothenberger shared. There will also be advertising on rapidevents, riversideathletics, and on the Riverside web page.

“Our hope is that students will automatically think of the Lounge when they are looking to purchase something,” said Rothenberger.

“At Riverside, the WAVE was originally our school store… thanks to Mr. Bruneau and his support we are now able to re-open the school store and help other departments throughout the school with merchandise sales,” said Rothenberger.

Indigenous Podcast – Hitch and Run

Barbara Kentner is a woman whose death inspired the Thunder Bay indigenous community to stand up and demand a voice. Around her legacy we created a podcast entitled, “Hitch and Run” that share’s the story of Barbara Kentner and the effects it had on the community. To create this podcast, we researched the life of Kentner before the incident, during her hospital time, and her family and community after her passing. Then we integrated the information into a script. Then we used a Blue Snowball Microphone, provided by Vancity. During the proses we made a cover image for the podcast. We took inspiration from the Barbara Kentner billboard. We used Audacity to record, edit, and incorporate royalty free music to set the tone of the podcast.

Discord's new Clubhouse-like feature, Stage Channels, is available now - The VergeReport: Microsoft in Talks to Acquire Discord, a Gamer Chat Operator, for Over $10 Billion | The Motley Fool

In 2015, Discord was created to allow friends to communicate while gaming. In five short years, the platform has expanded, “into a communication tool not just for gamers, but for everyone from study groups to sneakerheads to gardening enthusiasts” (Pierce, 2020). The app was established by Jason Citron and Stan Vishnevskiy, since then Stan has left the company. The idea was created by the two boys and their love of video games, “at the time, all the tools built for this job were slow, unreliable, and complex. [They] knew they could make a better service that encouraged talking, helped form memories, and recreated the feeling of togetherness all found through gaming” (Discord). Discord as an app is valued at, “7 billion US dollars,” and has annual revenues of approximately, “120 million US dollars” (Viktor, 2021). Discord was developed to innovate on technologies to make communication between gamers more reliable. Today, discord has many features such as: live streaming, podcasting, servers, blogging, voice chats, and text chats. According to the discord site, discord has 150 million active monthly users, 19 million active servers per week, and 4 billion server conversation minutes daily. New Media Intro

New media is a way to connect and convey information in an interactive way. For example, Netflix, people watch shows on Netflix based on if they like it or desire to watch the show. Tradition media is not two sided, for example, television is one way you can’t fast forward, the television is in control. Media consumption can be fragmented by using multiple forms of media at once, “some research counts that hour you spend watching TV and looking at your smartphone simultaneously as two hours, one on each of the screens” (Donovan, 2018). Using multiple devises at once or multiple times a day is your media fragmenting and can be considered too much screen time. Everybody uses media integrated into their daily schedules, “the average American [spends] more than 12 hours a day with various media, from TV to smartphones to laptops to newspapers… But is consuming too much media like eating too many french fries bad for your health?” (Donovan, 2018). Yes, consuming too much media can be bad for you, especially if you don’t have self-control when it comes to your phone. There are many things anyone can do to use media less for your heath. First, try putting electronics on silent, to avoid temptations. Also, setting time limits in some apps to avoid using the device for hours at a time. Lastly, hobbies can keep people from looking at their phone. Everybody must look something up every now and then, but is that source reliable? Some questions everyone should ask, does it match our previous knowledge? Is the author credible? Is this source recently updated? And better yet does the information match the information on other sources? When researching make sure the information is correct.

Paper Planes

The hypothesis, when plane 1 (origami plane) is thrown it will travel farther because the design is more aerodynamic is rejected. The data shows that plane 1’s design did not travel the farthest distance. It was plane 2 that had the best results and glided through the air the furthest. The results of this investigation are useful in case you ever need to win a paper airplane competition. This investigation can be improved by having a more open space area, by making sure there is enough room for the airplanes to move without hitting the wall. Also, making sure there is no wind/breezes effecting the path of the plane. Anther questions that needs to be answered, what would happen if you put weights on the plane?

I learned how to fold new types of airplane during this lab. Also, how to calculate le average distance. Lastly, I learned a new way to write a lab.
