My name is Claire Bajaj, and as a very unlucky member of the Celiac community, I have learned many tips and tricks to make eating completely gluten-free almost tolerable. I am 17 years old, and when I am constantly googling the specific ingredients that go into my body (including my lip balm) it has not always been easy. I was recently diagnosed just over a year ago, and over this last year here are the top 5 tips I live by.

1. ALWAYS google despite what other people tell you

Seasonings or other toppings can be your worst enemies, don’t feel guilty when asking what seasoning or sauces were used on your food. Don’t be fooled by the following phrases:

“I only used a little, you’ll be fine right?” If you’re celiac, every crumb matters.

“This says gluten-free! would you like to try it? I tried it with my not gluten-free food, it was great!” They cross-contaminated the container by adding in gluten (most often happens with shared spreads or dips)

“Gluten Smart” Restaurants often use this term to advertise their specialty allergy menu, however, 50% of that menu is likely cross-contaminated in the preparation process.

I find it helpful when I can do my research when selecting a restaurant. Calling their location can give you better insight into what the restaurant environment is like. 11 Gluten Free Funnies and Memes ideas in 2021 | funny pictures, funny, memes

2. Actually learn how to cook

Cooking may come as second nature for you, but, cooking completely gluten-free can be quite challenging. While dining out is enjoyable, it is not always straightforward with Celiac Disease. Perfecting some basic cooking tricks and meals will save you the worry. Pinterest is very convenient when discovering your new at-home recipe list. you can often find great alternatives for typical gluttonous ingredients (for example, flour, seasonings sauces)

3.  Splurge when you can

Now is the time to invest in new non-cross-contaminated gluten-free kitchen supplies. It is simply not worth the risk to use old pots and pans that you have been cooking gluten on. This will make all the difference when adapting to this new lifestyle. If you live amongst people who are not

gluten-free DO NOT allow them to use your supplies (yes, it is nice not having to share)

4. Trial and Error

Over time you will collect a list of restaurants, brands, grocery stores, and GF bakeries that you like. To formulate this list, you will have to open your mind to discover new things. Don’t be afraid, you are restricted enough as is. Check out any local GF restaurants and shops you might be surprised to see what you can find.
