Midterm Self Assessment and Goal-Setting – Chemistry 11

Strengths and Weaknesses :

Atomic Theory

Strengths:

  • I am able to memorize and interpret the orbital diagrams and their order and know how to apply that knowledge to questions.
  • I can read, understand, and interpret ionization energy charts with ease.
  • I can recognize different patterns in ionization energy charts and am able to teach my peers the information in detail.

Weaknesses:

  • It took me some time to understand atomic radii and the shielding effect.
  • Understanding how bond dipoles affect molecular polarity and interactions between molecules was difficult at first.

Bonding

Strengths:

  • I understand the different types of chemical bonds (ionic and covalent) and can identify them based on electron configurations, diagrams and equations.
  • I am proficient in drawing Lewis structures and predicting molecular shapes using VSEPR theory.
  • I can effectively explain the concept of electronegativity and how it affects bond polarity and dipole moments.

Weaknesses:

  • Understanding resonance structures and how to depict them correctly was difficult to grasp at first.

The Mole

Strengths:

  • I have a solid grasp of mole concept calculations, including conversions between moles, mass, and number of particles.
  • I am able to use Avogadro’s number effectively in calculations.

Weaknesses:

  • Understanding STP and SATP and the differences between them was difficult to grasp.

Midterm Self-Assessment and Goal Setting Assignment – Science Co-op

Pillar 3 : Physics Lab Skills

Current Strengths

I can efficiently follow lab procedures.

  • I read through the lab procedures carefully and thoroughly to ensure my full understanding before starting a lab.

I efficiently set up and clean up my lab.

  • After reading through the lab procedure, I easily find the equipment and supplies needed for the lab. I ensure that it is all good and ready for use.

Future Growth

I would like to be more concise and specific when communicating results, applications and sources of error.

  • I tend to find myself rambling on and sometimes losing the point and not being able to show my understanding

I would like my data taking to be more precise the first time taking it

  • I sometimes forget sig. figs. or don’t correctly add my measurements the first time which make data recording take longer

Goals

When writing conclusion and reports, I want to do them in the least number of sentences possible.

  • I will do this by trying to limit it to one (maybe two) sentence(s) per question.

I want to raise my overall grades on labs

  • I will do this by double checking all my work, specifically in places I know I need to work on.

Revisiting Midterm Goal Setting

My two goals for the semester were:

  • When writing conclusion and reports, I want to do them in the least number of sentences possible.
  • Raise my overall grades on labs

I believe that I have met my goals as I have been doing better on labs and am able to be a lot more concise in my conclusions. A challenge when writing my conclusion was resisting the urge to add any “fluff” or wanting to over-explain.

As I will be in Life Science 12 next semester, my goals don’t need to be modified for next semester. Specifically, I would like to continue working on being concise in my lab conclusions as I believe it is a good skill to have.
