Electric House Project

This is my electric house that we had to complete to show our understanding of circuits. We also had to identify a problem and fix it with a 3D-printed object. Our original idea was to create a Hogwarts-themed house but unfortunately, it didn’t look like it.

Project Questions:

    1. You have three lights bulbs. All have the same intensity when lit. Explain how you can prove to a classmate that they are connected in series by unscrewing one light bulb. Support your answer.

When unscrewing one light bulb from a series circuit, all of the light bulbs will turn off too no matter how many light bulbs you have. The reason behind it is because the same current runs through all parts of the circuit, screwing a bulb would block the current from flowing through it. In order to flow back to the positive side of the battery, the electrons have to pass through all the loads. Unlike in the parallel circuit, the electrons only have on path to flow, unscrewing one light bulb would block the flow of electrons and make it an open circuit.

    1. You have three light bulbs. All have the same intensity when lit. Explain how you can prove to a classmate that they are connected in parallel by unscrewing one light bulb.

Light bulbs in a parallel circuit have multiple pathways for the electrons to flow therefore unscrewing one light bulb won’t affect the 2 others. The 2 other light bulbs will still work because electrons trying to get to the positive side of the battery flow through another path if the load is unavailable.

Note: you may need to play around with practice circuits to determine the answers for #3 and #4. You can do this using real circuits or the PhET Circuit Builder

    1. You have three light bulbs. Two are connected in parallel. This parallel combination is connected in series with the third light bulb. Describe the relative intensity of each bulb. Support your answer.

The light bulb in the series circuit is brighter than the other two, its voltage is 6.00V and its current is 0.60 A. The total voltage from the load is 9.00V and the current is 0.60 V. Both the light bulbs in parallel have voltages of 3.00V and 0.30A currents. The voltage in series is 6.00V instead of 3.00V like the parallel circuits because the voltages add together to equal the voltage from the battery which is 9.00V. The voltage is the same throughout in a parallel, so the two light bulbs have the same voltage. The voltage from the series light bulb and the two light bulbs from parallel add together to form the total voltage provided by the battery. The light bulb in series is brighter because the current is bigger due to the increase in voltage that is pushing it compared to the smaller voltage pushing the current in parallel.

    1. In Question 3, describe the relative intensities of the two remaining lit bulbs if one of the bulbs in parallel was unscrewed. Support your answer.

The remaining to light bulbs has the same voltage (4.50V) and amperes (0.45V) leading to the same brightness. When one of the light bulbs from parallel is removed, the pathway for electrons is removed too. This means that removing a light bulb from parallel turns the circuit into a series circuit.

    1. Outline a step-by-step method that could be used to determine the resistance of the light bulbs in one of your circuits. Feel free to include a circuit diagram of your set-up.

    1. Using your method outlined in Question 5, determine the resistance of the bulbs in one of your circuits.

1) Define a problem in your electric house that could be solved by technology.

When testing out the circuits we found that we need two people to do it. One person to hold up the battery so one person could go in to check the switches and light. This problem emerged because we used short circuits and needed something to hold up the battery. At first, we wanted to just tape the battery to the house but the battery was too unstable for that. We realized we needed something with a more rough surface for the tape to stick on.

2) Dream possible solutions to the problem

As I stated, we could’ve just taped the battery to the house but it was inconvenient to take off because it took the cardboard off with it. It also wasted too much tape and didn’t last long before it hit the desk with a loud thud. At first, I suggest that we had a batter stand/table where we would prop/hold up the battery and balance the wires but we realized it was a horrible idea. What was supposed to a like a highchair for the battery was even more unstable and capacious. In the end, we agreed upon a battery holder to secure the battery onto the house.

3) Deliver a solution to the problem. Print your design. Document the process.

We were pretty happy with how the 3D print turned out. The printing only took 2 hours which was less than I expected since it was my first time using a 3D printer. We had to make the holder a bit bigger because there might be a possibility something might go wrong and the battery won’t fit.

4) Debrief the quality of the process you went through

This project to me was like a roller coaster, one moment I liked it, and one moment I don’t. The designing process was very fun because I liked drawing and me and my partner were good at drawing circuits. the 3D printing process went smoothly and the only slight problem we had is that we didn’t know how to use Tinkercad. However, the actual circuit building causes many headaches on my part. The circuits were unstable and very finicky, one mistake or wiggle would make you wonder if it was the lights or the wires.

Electric House Reflection core competencies

Energy Sway and MLA letter/Information Fluency

For this assignment, we were asked to pick an energy issue and use our knowledge to answer some questions. To show our understanding we had to create a Sway, write a letter to the Honorable George Haymen, and write a reflection.

Letter for George Haymen Mine Contamination.docx

(I couldn’t embed the Word document)

1) What questions did you need to research in order to create your sway?

The questions I had to research were:

Why do governments continue with mining projects despite knowing the risks?

What can the province do about mine contamination to protect indigenous communities?

2) What new or familiar digital tools did you try to use as you worked through this project?

I tried to use the resources on Gale Engage but it didn’t really work for me. However, as I read some of the articles I found ideas for my questions. Another new tool I used was a citation machine, it was helpful to me as I was not good at citing my sources. The images I used were from Flickr on the Creative Commons search which I have never used before. Most Of the time though I used Google to search for articles to answer my questions.

3) What was the process you used to investigate the topic and how did you verify and cite the information you found?

To start brainstorming ideas I went to Gale Engage and searched “Mine contamination in BC” to get some ideas. When I figured out the questions I wanted to ask I used Google to read articles from trustworthy sites to answer my questions. I thoroughly read all the information provided in the articles and websites and in my own words wrote answers. I had a Word document to document all my sources.

4) How did the process of completing this challenge go? What could you have done better?

The process went smoothly as I was able to follow all the steps in the assignment. I learned many new things along the way as well as used new tools that would help me in the future with other research projects. I do feel like I could have more questions to show my understanding of my chosen topic. It would also be better if I looked beyond Gale Engage and used other resources in the online library.

Core Competency

For this assignment, I used my critical thinking to question and investigate my topic. To create questions, I investigated my topic and its issues, and with that knowledge, I developed and designed insightful questions that need to be answered. When reading articles I had to analyze the information with my understanding and write in my own words. To write the letter I developed some points that I want to communicate and with that, I designed the letter with my partner. In the future, I will build my critical thinking skills by applying the knowledge I learned about internet fluency to my other assignments.

HCE 9 – English Assignment

The following is an exploration of “The Arrival: The New Country,” created by Sean Tam through a poem on the learning concept of inclusivity.

The Symbol of Freedom

Swish goes the water as the boat pushes against the waves

Chatter goes the crowd as an unfamiliar sight catches their gaze

They look around for feelings of comfort after leaving a place they love

Is that a teapot, teacup, squirrels, and doves?

Limestone, sandstone, granite, or copper?

They may point, they may wonder

My partner and I will still stand strong with smiles on our face

We understand their discomfort in this unfamiliar place

Mined then melted and molded in place

Sculpted and constructed then put in the states

In this unfamiliar place, we shake hands for peace

Welcoming human numbers as they continue to increase

A mere statue, or symbol we may be

But freedom, hope, and equality are represented to humanity

In hopes of building a more accepted community

While we continue to smile and shake hands for peace

Substance Abuse Role Play Assignment

This is the link for the substance abuse role-play video assignment:

PE 9 SUBSTANCE ABUSE ROLE PLAY

GROUP MEMBERS: Liv, Hakeem, Sharon, Christy

Your task: Use the scenario provided or make one up (needs to be approved by your teacher). The role play is meant to be in the context of a friendship/relationship that you care about and hope to maintain and has to relate to substance use or related addictive behaviours (i.e. Gaming, gambling, excessive use of Internet, etc.)

SCENARIO (describe your chosen scenario briefly here):

Liv has an addiction of constantly stealing cough drops from her uncle.

To do:

  • Decide which role each person will play.
  • Consider the IDEAL decision-making model when you think about how this situation should be resolved.
  • Keep in mind that you want to RESOLVE the conflict in a peaceful manner using some of the strategies we have practised in class including the previous unit (i.e. reflective listening, assertive communication, delay, refusal or negotiation skills, apologizing, etc.).
  • Develop a role play script that involves all group members.
  • Complete the questions below.
  • Practise your role play and be prepared to present it to the class.
  • Hand in the questions below after all performances: ________________________________

Questions:

  1. What are the influences involved in your role play? (i.e., difference of opinion, going against your values, pressure from friends, pressure from a dating partner, etc.)

Some influences were stress, addiction, and the inability to cope. The student was facing stress and couldn’t figure out what to do and didn’t tell an adult. She decides to steal cough drops because of the short-term relief from her problems. She got addicted to it and couldn’t stop. Her change in behavior concerned the people around her. With the influence of trusted adults, she was able to reflect and cope with her problems and live a healthy life again.

  1. Write a script for your role play (on a separate sheet of paper).

Scene 1: Liv coughs and steals her uncle’s cough drops from his bag

Scene 2: She eats the medicine in front of her friend (Sharon) and the teacher(me).

Scene 3: Both the teacher and her friend notice, Sharon is called to the front of the room to have a talk about her friend. The teacher questions Sharon because both of them find Liv not acting the same and feel concerned. Sharon Decided to delay finding help because Liv is supposedly only taking it for her sore throat.

Scene 4: Liv keeps taking them for more than 3 weeks. The teacher starts to feel more concerned.

Scene 5: The teacher holds a meeting with Liv’s uncle/guardian and confronts Liv about the cough drops.

Scene 6: Liv confesses and agrees to see someone who could help her, and we get to hear her side of the story.

Scene 7: Mythili/ therapist listens and helps her regain control of her life.

  1. Explain how your conflict/issue was resolved. What skills were used to resolve this conflict/issue?

The people around her started to notice her strange behavior and confront her in the meeting. Sharon and the teacher observe and negotiate what to do about Liv. Her uncle communicates his concern and recommends a therapist to help her well-being. She confesses/communicates her problem and agrees to get help. She goes to the therapist who helps her go back to the way it is. The therapist also helps her reflect and connect with others the way she used to.

  1. How would using these skills make the person in the role play more resilient?

Now that the person realizes that the people around her support her, she will be able to connect with them and build a better relationship. They will understand that taking cough drops will not help them solve the problem, only proper treatments can. The therapist will help them self-regulate, reflect, build relationships, and understand personal values and choices. With that knowledge, she will go on and be able to overcome any other obstacles in their way building more resilience along the way.

I enjoy working with my team and the peaceful environment I work in.

  1. What are some of the things you dislike about this job?

It requires me to spend too much time in Infront of the screen. Long-term behavior can lead to damaging your eyes.

  1. How do you anticipate this job changing in the next 5 years or so?

Since this job is about designing, I anticipate that in the future it will change along with technology. Whether it is different sprinkler systems or different software programs.

Student Reflections: 1. Give three reasons why you would like this job (be specific):

  1. a) It is stable, and the job won’t disappear in the future. I won’t have to worry too much as opposed to careers no one has heard of.
  2. b) It doesn’t require too much school, in comparison to careers like doctors, lawyers, surgeons, et cetera. The schooling is a fair amount, a minimum of 4 years.
  3. c) It’s not dangerous like a firefighter or a police officer and you do not need to move. Most things are online, so it doesn’t matter if you stay home or go to the office.

  1. Give three reasons why you would not like this job (be specific):
  2. a) It doesn’t really spark my interest, not that it is a bad job, but it is a typical office job. Even though that is what a part of me wants I think maybe I want something that is more hands-on like a dentist or a surgeon. I guess what I am trying to say is that it’s a bit boring for me and I want to move around a bit more.
  3. b) Too much exposure to computers. I was always told that it is not good to sit in front of a screen all day but what could I do if I was paid to do so? I know that today many careers now also revolve around technology and computer screens, but it seems too Not saying my eyesight is good, compared to others it is not so good but if I sit in front of a screen all day it isn’t going to get any better, is it?
  4. c) Salary, it’s not bad, lots of other benefits but I want to be someone with more breaks and holidays, like a teacher maybe.

  1. Is this job for you? Why or why not?

I am not sure yet. On one hand, yes, I can visualize myself doing this in the future, it seems the most realistic. On the other hand, no, it isn’t what I really want. It seems too soon to decide even if I only have a few years left if I can I want to major in something a little more smarty-pants like a doctor, lawyer, dentist, etc.

  1. Explain the value of the TOKTW experience in relation to your ideas about your post secondary (after high school) plans (education?, training?, travel?, work?).

Take your kids to work day is like going into the future for a day. For one whole day you get to go somewhere you have never been to see the future. Since working is not so distant anymore, I have thought about post-secondary plans. I have considered studying the same thing as my father so maybe he could help, and it isn’t a bad career at all. Although I didn’t get to do anything today, I now have a little idea of what it is like. Just to be clear, the reason I didn’t participate in the activities was not that I didn’t want to, it was because I know nothing about this field.

The Veldt by Ray Bradbury – Blackout Poem

Here is my blackout poem on the Veldt. I did mine on paper. I found this poem on page 9 of the novel Red Rising

My poem named “Regret” explores theme 3 from Ray Bradbury’s The Veldt on Excessive consumption.

“I lived in peace but brought war”: Humans most of the time are happy the way they are but with advertisements being so darn effective it is hard to stop right? So they must buy all they can. In this sentence they brought war.

“Gold gnaws my heart”: They didn’t know that buying whatever they are buying would lead to so much pain and suffering all they care about is that they have to own it. All they see when buying is the “gold”.

“This is the noble lie that poisoned his eyes” and “It is not free”: This is regret and maybe them rethinking everything. They are “blind to underlying warnings related to our materialistic attitude” because no matter how much money it cost all they do is buy.

“Children do not know pain”: Adults have no self-control so why would children have it? It shows that children are getting dragged along with everyone else. This relates to The Veldt because the children killed their parents without a second thought and without any empathy. They do not know that that will harm them in the future because all they care about is the stuff that their parent’s bought for them.

“Thinks like me, subhuman, sharpened, strengthened, survive”: This shows that technology is getting better and better before our eyes. It’s subhuman, it has strengthened and it will survive. It will do all the things you ask and even know what you want or like.

Poetic devices- “Gold gnaws at my heart” and “This is the noble lie that poisoned his eyes” are both personifications because gold cannot gnaw at their heart and lies can’t poison something. The imagery created shows that this person is in so much pain, it literally gnaws their heart, poisoned his eyes, or stabbed their heart.” Thinks like me, subhuman, sharpened, strengthened, survive” is an alliteration because they begin with the same constant.

This poem “Regret” shows that owning more may not be the best. Sometimes things are best the way it is. Even if they have “gold” it might be the cause of their problems. What they bought may not make them any happier, but they might now realize the problem of consumption.

Indigenous Explorations- St Anne’s Residential School

Intro

This assignment was to learn more about first nation communities and residential schools. I worked alone and I chose St Anne’s residential school.

Podcast:

-Your experiences creating this assignment.

My experience while working on this assignment was mostly pretty good. I learned a lot while writing and researching. I have never made a podcast before so I got to experience that, it was pretty hard. Some things were pretty shocking but also not at the same time. Surprisingly, I actually was happy to experience something new and have a challenge rather than write an essay or something.

– Your group’s path in researching the topic.

I wanted to do the residential school topic but was unsure what school to pick so I resorted to Google. I searched up “The worst residential school in Canada” and St Anne’s came up. St. Anne's Indian Residential School: Fort Albany First Nation - Brutal & Notorious (*Set To 720p) - YouTubeWhile researching I found out that it fits the title way too much. Sometimes I would get distracted just because the torture methods were crazy and I needed to back it up even though I know I won’t include it. I also spent a lot of time reading stories from survivors. As expected they were heartbreaking and apparently most survivors only got to share their stories when they reach adulthood due to the lack of knowledge of the subject. Which goes to show how important it is to learn more about their experiences.

– Obstacles or items you learnt in recording.

Recording Vectors & Illustrations for Free Download | FreepikSince I worked alone it was hard to make it sound like a conversation or “bounce your ideas off each other”. I tried my best to sound conversational but while recording I found out that I have a very monotone voice. When reading my script I found that my voice sounds un normally high and it doesn’t sound natural. My mom likes to listen to Chinese podcasts when she drives to school but they were usually two people or more. Before recording, I listened to other solo podcasts and tutorial videos and they recommend pretending you are talking to a friend but my voice doesn’t sound like me at all not matter how hard I try to control it. Another problem I ran into was getting the chance to record. There were some rooms but most people got them so I and someone else split the time we spent in it. Overall, stressful but doable.

Option 1Critical Thinking … How does your artifact tie in with what you have learned before? How has your thinking changed?

During the process of this project, I already knew what residential schools were like but this one was beyond what I thought was bad. At first, I thought that the goal was to strip them of their culture but I think St Anne’s just wanted to kill them all. This project was to teach both others and me about St Anne’s residential school. Throughout my years 20,239 Critical Thinking Illustrations & Clip Art - iStockat school, I learned many things about residential schools and their impact, the impact from this school was just as bad, if not worse. Before this project, it was just another residential school to me. After researching I understand why people called it hell on earth. I don’t think my thinking changed but I would say I am more educated now than before. Maybe you could say that now I know a lot more and can share a lot more. In conclusion, creating this project I used the knowledge I already knew and researched it bit more to teach other about it.
